llya Efimor -vs- orange tree samples guitar plug-in

which one would you pick and why?

You’ll never find a consensus, as both are quality products and both have their fans. And then you're going to get unhelpful people like me, who suggest a third alternative. As much as I respect and find good uses for Orange Tree guitars (and I own pretty much them all), I’ve found I ultimately prefer AmpleSound for my workflow, particularly the handling of strumming. Both sound great, though, and Orange Tree’s selection of effects (and thus preset sounds) is, I think, superior. (I don’t own Ilya, so no thoughts there.) Ample guitars aren’t on sale now (although the electric basses are), but do go on sale periodically.

Not familiar with Efimov's instruments first hand.. but, not really impressed with the demo's I just heard. Definitely sounds sampled.

Orange Tree Samples instruments, on the other hand.. I own all the acoustics, and one of the electrics (Dracus). And.. I'm in for another (Rock Standard), with their current Group Buy.

Would definitely recommend any of the Orange Tree stuff.

I do have all the Ilya Efimov guitar and bass products and they are first rate - on the same level as the the scarbee basses imo, but even a bit more flexible since more different articulations are present. I do not own any Organge Tree product (expect from mind control), but I guess they are good, too. Just, the Efimov demos sound-wise impressed me more and the products are more feature rich. If they add an acoustic double bass you can say that all the basic bass and guitar are covered in their product line.

As much as I appreciate Efimov, I do consider OrangeTreeSamples to be the ultimate provider of virtual guitars. Sheer quality, eye for detail and playability.

Of course, this are sample libraries. You are just not familiar with the instruments, like you said. Simple as that.
While IE is not updating their libraries anymore for whatever reason, the sound quality of the samples is brilliant. As an owner of almost every guitar instrument and library available on the market, the IE nylon guitar is still one of the best, if not the best.
Regarding strumming, nothing beats Ample Sounds strumming engine.
