i'm not trying to convert you, i couldn't give a shite if you ever use a pda to write music, just stop chiming in with coments like, "my notebooks almost as portable" because it blatantly isn't.

Hey bugs, please reread my original post. Im not trying to debate the merits of using PDA's for music. I'm simply looking for people like blaster that are using those apps and can make some recommendations.

My opinion is that it WOULD be a real stretch to try to complete a whole track on a PDA but thats not what were talking about here....were talking about ultra-portable musical sketchpads. Software/hardware like Griff and Core-Sound is available NOW and with the increase in CPU speed in recent PDA's one can only assume more apps will be on the scene soon.

Today I'm gonna buy the Dell 624 mhz model and throw in a 1 gig memory card. Using an app like Griff that has a sampler with keymapping, mono and poly synths, plugs etc who's gonna say I cant make a "boom-bap" on the subway?

let me first say WICKED! I wish I was able to get one right now!
Second, there is a misnomer here: PDA is like Palm Pilot stuff, not a full computer as we normally think of them
Pocket PC is what you are speaking of, right? Like IPaq, Toshiba something someting 850 something, etc.

Third: Syntrax has a demo available that will run on your PC so you can see what it's like. I have had some genuine fun playing with it, even just as a little Pocket PC emulator running on my desktop. As far as I can tell it limits itself to the resources that would be available on a Pocket PC (user defineable). Try it out, for those who think this is just useless. I can definitely see myself benefiting from this, because lately I always seem to be out somewhere away from any computer when my really good ideas hit. So, what's the problem, dude? if you don't want to use it, don't. It doen't mean it's useless. (addressed to guy who thinks it is useless)

This is a real novel idea. I have toyed with the idea myself but never got round to try it out (or buy the PDA yet). I do a bit of traveling for my job and already have to carry a work laptop around. Another laptop would not be very practical.

If you can find a way for us to make this work I might follow.

yes! thanks for clarifying. I really dont know a damn thing about these devices besides what I've learned in the past few days. Maybe thats why Im thinking I can actaully make music on them huh?

What are the options for writing songs to .wav and the like?

Then again, would it be better to get one of those Yamaha QY70s from ebay?

Or even those little iPod sized multitrack recorders with a seq and effects built in

Choices...
But then again, is it more of a case of miniturisation than nessesity

The idea is, at least for me, make use of what you've got. I already have and use a PDA. It goes on business trips and the commute. Any means of music creation I get out of it is a bonus.

Yeah, that would make more sense

I had a look at the griff software with regards to future purchases. It looks really good, but a bit expensive for what it is. (Free MDA plugs for $10 each?)

(OT. always wanted to run something like MAME on a PDA
