I was able to select multiple notes this way, but I wasn't able to drag and copy those notes. In order to do that, I still needed to go back to the direct selection tool.
After you select multiple notes using the Time Ruler, you just do a copy and paste rather than a drag & drop. The copy and paste method works nicely in Sonar (unlike some hosts) because you can easily set the paste point by clicking the time line. No need to switch to the Group Select tool.

Works like a charm. :)

Using parts of different audio takes on different tracks for example is possible now so why not develop something similar for midi?
Having different midi "takes" in separate lanes on a midi track would be really cool, actually.

You should definitely report your idea to the Cakewalk folks!

Good thinking! :)

Post

multiple midi lanes is implemented.

also, I agree, I'd love in-place midi-editing like sx3 did it.
If it sounds good it is good.

Right -- I missed that.

The new track lanes are really cool, although it would be nice to have a few more features like the ability to rearrange the lanes via drag&drop like you can do with tracks. Or the ability to move a lane from one track to the next (as a new lane, not as a blend or overwrite of an existing clip). If you can do the above already, let me know! Otherwise, maybe in S5! :)

Post

You can do both of those as well :) When you move the clips, select 'Slide over to make room' as the movement type, and make sure 'show layers' is selected.

I am very much enjoying S4- the workflow is great.

Thanks for the response, Eric.

That doesn't seem to work, though, because when you select 'Slide over ...' it does what it says: it slides all the midi clips to the right except for the one that you are dragging and then it drops the dragged clip into the target lane. I was thinking more of a 'Reorder lanes' option (or something) where the lanes would simply change order without any shifting of clips in time and without merging one lane into another.

Not essential, I guess, but it might be nice for the future.

It works over here.

Not 100% like you'd want, its more of a side-effect, then an intended effect it seems, but it can be done.

The key is you have to have 'show lanes enabled'. Once you do that you'll see 2 lanes, with the clips, and you can move it around from there.

I agree tho, a dedicated tool for it might be nice.

That's strange. I do have 'show lanes enabled' and I do have multiple lanes in a track with midi clips in each lane. But when I drag&drop a midi clip from one lane to another using the 'slide to make room' option, Sonar slides the clip in the target lane and drops the dragged midi clip into the newly created hole.

Oh well, I guess I'll keep messing around with it.

Post

tonight I will try and do a step-by-step.

Like I said, its probably not how you want it, but it can be hacked into working

Oops, sorry, keep it as 'blend old and new' to keep the multiple midi lanes.

I don't know how / why it was working the other way before.. maybe it was all in my mind

after a day working in S4 I have to say that I'm very pleased I've stuck with Sonar after all..

the workflow is great, the freeze function is superb, the GUI changes -subtle as they are- are a big improvement

very pleased indeed :D
