Vertigo VSM-3 - A brilliant saturator with its blendable 2nd/3rd harmonics, M/S, and frequency-specific action
Unfiltered Audio Zip - The detector modes and auto-threshold give it a certain something no other compressor has
UA G8 - Works well for both typical cleanup and more creative uses
UA Sandman Pro - Not the same old digital delay, I love the modulation and adjustable sample rate
Metric AB - Useful for making meaningful comparisons to other tracks
Ampsims (Bassdude, Chandler, RockRack) - Tend to be juicier and more realistic than Guitar Rig/DAW ampsims
Townhouse compressor - I don't own it but it has a unique gritty smack I haven't heard from another SSL buss comp

Sorry to keep "turding-up" your thread, but I feel it already started out rather septic.

I'm on the fence. If there's a wide variety of solid plugins that folks have good experience with, I have a $2K annual budget, and if there's enough slots to fit the needs or desires, it might be a good deal. I can always halt the annual fee and just purchase what I need or want -- in the long term. $179 for a couple of years, with my budget is not a high risk.Unaspected wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 7:00 pm I don't think the subscription is worth it. Horses for courses though - it might good for some people.
The Brainworx consoles (excluding the Focusrite FC, as I've yet to demo), HG-2 and amp sims are all very good. Especially HG-2.
Unfiltered Audio's plugins are surprisingly good and useful. SpecOps and Sandman Pro stand out for me.

My recorded lifelong posts have nothing to do with whether or not I defend myself from those who attempt to turd lay. You're not messing with an amateur. This thread was not created with one iota of controversial tone. You're the stink bomb maker, and that's obvious. I'd say, 'nice try', but your attempt is astonishingly lame.escalona wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 7:51 pmQuite literally: 3 out of your 8 lifelong-posts on the forum are here only to insult others. Whilst I could afford it, it just doesn't offer much more than I already own - the value for money simply isn't there for me. Add to that the history of plugins like the Townhouse compressor retailing for just $4 only a few of weeks ago after the voucher - and I still didn't pick it up. Today it's meant to be worth $299!
I'll still purchase individual plugins from PA though. We'll see what the rest of the new offerings are and whether it sweetens the deal or not.

It's interesting how the money schemes change and play out. I paid $370 or so for Waves Abbey Road collection, on sale, something that, if memory serves, was once $1200. Now the cost is astonishingly low but they're trying to get everyone on board with support and maintenance fees. No one I know in the business calls plugin companies for operational tech support. They may call because of install screw-ups or advice requests through email support. But that's about it, in my circle of friends. And since no other company charges for support, it's a stretch, imo. So, it's a funny little cash flow model.Unaspected wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 8:12 pmIf affordable and useful, then I guess you're one of those horses.uraniumbilly wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 7:53 pmI'm on the fence. ADAPTR Metric AB - Great for loading up reference tracks and A/B them against your own.
Bx SSL E - Try this trick with the compressor: set the ratio to 1:1, set the threshold as high (technically low: -20) as it will go. Now increase the ratio slightly as you watch GR meter. Stop when the first LED is lit up. Works on just about any source. The EQ is a classic as well.
Bx Townhouse - Pretty good SSL Bus Comp. I still probably prefer The Glue, and I have a hardware SSL clone, but the Bx gets used on occasion.
Unfiltered Audio - Lots of good stuff from them. BYOME/TRIAD for multi-fx chains. Sandman Pro for crazy delays.
I have a few other PA plugins and don't really use them much if ever.

Good call on the Unfiltered Audio plugins - I've got SpecOps, Triad and Byome, but barely used them (picked them up dirt cheap in the last sales). Fiedler Audio Stage is also pretty sweet for panning and weird stereo fx and colouring of sound.

Using the consoles for sounds and groups, then parallel compression from the bx_townhouse and HG-2 on the master. That is such a good combo. The SSL channels strips have switchable dynamics and eq modules. The alternate on the G is really sweet for high and low end boosts. Try the maag and bax eq’s for this as well.
Triad has some really nice reverbs, which you can apply to just a single band. If you then make the bands dynamic you get really interesting motion.
Spl vitalizer can vitalize high end, but also tighten up bass. There’s a trick (i got from YouTube) where you load two instances. Set bass to ‘loose’ on the first and ‘tight’ on the second and you have a nice bass enhancer.
Phil Cascade has a great filter to tame harshness. It’s really good at de-emphasizing things if you play with the bias and grid knobs. This one takes a bit of time to get to know.
Spec ops is also worth studying up on. It can do subtle enhancements as well. Might not seem that way at first.

I can't recall fully but didn't Digidesign used to charge for Pro Tools tech support?uraniumbilly wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 8:22 pmIt's interesting how the money schemes change and play out. Anyway. Value is in the ear of the beholder. Plugin Alliance have some truly great plugins and if you have yet to own any, you might well find their subscription to be of worth.
Absolutely. I didn't mean to put Townhouse down for what it is. It's just that The Glue does sound subjectively better - and is currently being updated.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2019 8:22 pm Bx Townhouse - Pretty good SSL Bus Comp. Not bad on vocals either. I found myself employing that during my last mix and the one I should be working on now.

XL, Alpha comp and museq on the master, Vertigo VCS-2 and Digital eq on groups, mpressor on drums and opto on channels. Most of the ampsims where appropriate (not just on guitars).
OR
E console on everything and Townhouse on the master if I want a "desk" sound, if you know what I mean.
