The harmonic selection is not quite like it is in that video ... it is more like selection bars. Did they change it or is it a setting issue? Actually I notice a few other things are different, like the "Tolerance" (in dB) setting is missing, even though it is mentioned in the manual. Maybe there is at least some way to turn off the "marching ants" in the selection so you can see what you are doing?

(Edit: added some needless words)

thats how it is in SL4 as far asi can tell looking at the vid on a tablet

What type of copy protection are they using? The manual does not mention how to install the software, and I do not see a demo version. So probably they are using challenge response instead of the Steinberg elicenser??

There's also an outdated video for version 2 on Groove3. Most of the explanations still apply, just a few of the features appear to have been moved into different menu items. It's a pretty specialised tool, but you can do some mighty interesting things with it. It has ARA2 functionality, which means you can work with it on track items directly in hosts like Cubase and Reaper.
Imagine this: you have a kick track and a bass track. You load the kick track and the bass track as separate layers. You "select all" of the kick track, then you "cast" (it's a processing function) it onto the bass track. You now have a bass track with the spectral content of the kick track removed whenever the kick plays, which is great when you're trying to make room for a kick drum in a mix. Used this way, it's like the ultimate dynamic EQ, but restricted to where the sound actually happens.
While I don't see myself using this thing everyday, I definitely feel it was worth getting. Have a glitch on your otherwise perfect guitar take? Recorded a car door slamming in the background of your otherwise perfect vocal track? Have a loop you need to remove an instrument from? Worry no more.
Confucamus.

Cool, thanks. The demo version is hidden in a drop down menu on the product page, so I didn't find it when I was looking before.

I've upgraded from sl4 to sl6, I've not used either one extensively but sl6 seems a lot more crash prone, also there are segments in the manual of sl6 that seem to refer to older versions...Anyway I like what I see so far, if I could suggest a couple of things (probably more for the creative side of things) it would be to be the ability to convolve between layers while using these tools and also the ability to work within the confines of a selected loop regardless of frequency selection.

There are also some interesting ideas, I've seen in kyma like thinning out a spectrum, smoothing amps, frequencies, and moving around transients (formants).
A combination of the two actually would be a match in heaven, resynthesizing the analyzed material :)

Anyway, very excited about this program, and hopefully your work will flourish under Steinberg.

Hi - you should maybe also post this on the Steinberg forums; supply a couple of crash dumps too if you can. The developer/creator seems quite responsive there.

Clues in this thread where to find the dump files (Mac or Win):-

Hello all,

Today we have released a new maintenance update for Spectralayers Pro, as always you can find it in the Steinberg Download Assistant and at our downloads pages. You can also find the Version History in the Steinberg Download Assistant:

Best regards,

After testing the update version for about 30 minutes I must say that SL6 is now much snappier, less crash-prone, faster to work with, so it seems some major issues have been tackled.
