How will smart software (artificial intelligence) influence the perception and creation of music?

No, there's no conspiracy. Who's there to conspire? Music software has become more popular because over the years it has become better, cheaper, and easier to use on more computers owned by more people. It's just simple economics. What I'm talking about is a kind of musical laziness that comes with that ease of use.

sounds like a planAloysius wrote:So you're saying it's a conspiracy? The AI creators are actively destroying traditional music making skills with DAWs, so the robots can seamlessly take over their role.

Well....it would explain a lot.

I hate to break it to you, but the possibilities offered by DAWs are infinitely more varied and creative than what can be done with guitar and vocals.Brother Greg wrote:As for AI-generated music, the question for me is, “What kind of music are we talking about?” DJs can now construct, rather than compose, music, using a bunch of music loops, including drum loops, by mixing and matching among them. There’s no need to even know how play a keyboard. The jump from that to AI-generated music isn’t much of a jump. But that music is very different from someone playing a guitar and singing lyrics.
And the skills required to produce electronic dance music are just different from keyboard or guitar skills. It would take a guitarist just as long to learn those skills than the other way around. Sure, anyone can slap together some loops just for their own enjoyment, but so can anyone sing and strike a handful of chords for their own enjoyment. To play to huge audiences around the world is a whole different ball game, and to do that requires mastery of your chosen instrument, talent and years of practice.

If you can read German, there is a very article about artifical inteligence in "Die Zeit". Perfect fit for this thread...

Now that, unlike artificial intelligence, sounds frightening.Tj Shredder wrote: Perfect fit for this thread...

There's a good interview with composer Holly Herndon in the latest TapeOp, including discussion of an AI composition/performance bot Holly created named "Spawn".

Thanks. That was a good read. I listened to her release. It's got some very interesting sounds. But it's very "synthy" and not in a.good way.Winstontaneous wrote: Mon Jul 29, 2019 7:19 pm There's a good interview with composer Holly Herndon in the latest TapeOp, including discussion of an AI composition/performance bot Holly created named "Spawn".![]()
