Cubase Question - ASIO4all

I am having a problem with Cubase. It won't work with ASIO4all, which is what you use with a Behringer mixer (which is my I/O device). It was working fine on my old laptop but on the new laptop there is a problem with no channels being available. Even if I open the control panel, I can't switch the USB channels on. Both Komplete Kontrol and Maschine work perfectly well, as do any and all of my standalone softsynths, so I don't think it is ASIO4all that's causing the problem. It's just Cubase that won't work. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think the Behringer mixers are class compliant, so you shouldn't need low level USB drivers.
Have you checked Device Manager to see if there's a conflict of any sort that might be stopping the mixer from being able to communicate with other hardware?

Yes and the fact that everything else works fine indicates there are no problems with the mixer or ASIO4all. It has to be in Cubase somewhere, although the fact that it also affects the ASIO panel is a bit weird.

That suggests that the problem isn't with Cubase, but somewhere at a lower level, but as you have other hardware working with ASIO4ALL it's strange that it won't behave correctly with the mixer.
Maybe you could try installing the Behringer ASIO drivers to see if that works? I know ASIO4ALL is probably a better option, but it might give you some more clues as to exactly where the problem is if you can get it working with the Behringer drivers.

Trying to think back when I had a Behringer mixer connected to Windows, and I recall a few ASIO quirks. One that comes to mind is the order you install the drivers. If you restart and reinstall the drivers without the mixer connected, it somehow does a better install than if you have the mixer connected. You then shut down, connect the mixer and restart.
Might be worth a shot if all else fails.

You should always install the drivers without the device connected. Every USB device I've ever installed drivers for tells you that.
There is no such thing as "Behringer drivers". Behringer tell you to go and download ASIO4all.Forgotten wrote: Tue Jul 30, 2019 3:49 amMaybe you could try installing the Behringer ASIO drivers to see if that works? Old Laptop USB 2.0, new laptop USB 3.0? Just an idea, sometimes older devices don't like 3.0
Another idea from an old german forum: Try installing the Behringer USB Audio driver (driverscape) before installing ASIO4all.

For me, "old" is a relative term. My "old" laptop is 10 months old and packs USB 3.1, just like the new one. In any event, 99% of audio devices are USB 2 anyway so they'd work on either.

It looks like my problem has solved itself. Everything seems to be working fine tonight, although I am not at home and the Behringer mixer is not in the loop. But with Cubase running on ASIO4all through the laptop soundcard (headphones) it all seems to be working OK, even though Cubase still reports the outputs as being unavailable. If I get it back home tomorrow and it won't work with the Behringer, then at least I'll know what the problem is. Windows updated itself last night and I suspect that may have been what solved the issue.

That's odd. Why don't they provide ASIO drivers? ASIO4ALL is a emergency solution at best. It neither provides the same latency, nor the same performance as vendor ASIO drivers in most cases.BONES wrote: Tue Jul 30, 2019 5:39 am There is no such thing as "Behringer drivers". I use ASIO4ALL as well, but... rather when i'm too lazy to plugin in my audio interface.

It’s quite smart really. No driver cost or maintenance. No support calls. All of which helps in keeping B’s prices down.chk071 wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2019 11:40 amThat's odd. Very well possible, hopefully fixed it permanently.BONES wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2019 11:37 am Windows updated itself last night and I suspect that may have been what solved the issue.

Don't think it makes sense if you think about it. Referencing a freeware for the use of your product, worse latency, worse performance, no real warranty that it will run well on your computer at all... i think it's pretty nuts, TBH. And won't shed a good light on your business practices. If i was them, i'd rather reference Windows Audio, or the Steinberg genereic low latency ASIO driver, than ASIO4ALL, which was rather meant to work well with standard cheap audio cards/chips anyway.Mushy Mushy wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2019 11:55 amIt’s quite smart really. Nothing against ASIO4ALL. It just puzzles me how a pro audio company can rely on third party spare time developed freeware (which didn't receive an update in years, BTW).

TBH, I use the Steinberg one when I’m on the road because I hate ASIO4ALL.
Behringer operate on very low margins so reduction of software development makes sense to me. Don’t forget they’re not trying to be the ultimate low latency solution; just an entry to mid bedroom studio brand. And for that ASIO4ALL seems to be satisfactory.

I still have it installed as well, but i never checked it out. I'm curious now if i get the same latency/performance as with ASIO4ALL.Mushy Mushy wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2019 12:48 pm TBH, I use the Steinberg one when I’m on the road because I hate ASIO4ALL.
