A fellow 79er!

The only thing that I know is that the knobs are too small and I end up using other compressors. I wish there was a pre-made controller that worked with the SSL and then I'd probably use it more.

Yeah, but I like to dial knobs Plus, it doesn't help with the comp or the gate.

Behringer's BCR2000 automaps nicely. You don't get a little screen like the P1 with visual feedback; All the same the mappings are pretty comprehensive in covering all parameters. I typically lock a BCR2000 to the mixer & use a launchpad xl in tandem.
