I think 'keyboards' have gone into the 'trusty axe' catagory? I used to be into the hardware ooooh so long ago. And every year Roland would come out with say a Jupiter 8 - oooooh, must have that! Korg's new Poly-800 - ohhhhh, gimme gimme gimme! Yamaha's revolutionary DX's - ohhhh, just put it on top of the rest!

For me, I got a Yamaha EX5 synth over 5 years ago. I was pissed off at it so - needed a SCSI card, needed RAM, needed a Zip drive, needed a CD-ROM, can't play this with that, can't sample that to this...
Yet it coerced me into buying a laptop finally to manage it. What's happened is it now manages the laptop!

So like a 'trusty axe', it's become my virtusoso instrument. Guitarists don't give a fig on how the amps are mic'd, the racks used to get that Marshall sound, the piles of pedals at their feet. As long as they got their FAVE guitar in their hands, they'll get by. I get by with my EX5, plus my previous conquests of synths in the past. And I'm sure younger ones here may either opt for a hand me down Oxygen 8, or save up and buy an Alesis Ion II these days? It may become their 'trusty axe', or just another 'previous conquest'. But they will eventually find their 'trusty axe'.
