Generic?...
We need Sasha here. Man. I am no teacher. Starting in C No. IC is Maj7 and Dmin7is II and hence ascending diatonically the resulting chords are as I described shown. Transpose to any key.. hence generic. Hey I know I am no teacher but I could show you much simpler on my guitar. I also stink at typing-it took me 5 minutes to genrate this text.

I am a music teacher and I would explain it as generic too....

I must admit I teach my year 7 and 8's with the big M little m system though :D Maybe that might help some of the people here?

The roman numerals by themselves are used for triads only with the "I" being the root note of the key you are in (BeardedOne's example being in a Major key and adding the natural 7ths). Adding 7ths, 9ths, etc would result in ii7, or V9 (Min triad + min 7th and maj triad and maj 9th with a dominant/flat 7th usually included but not written). Flattening/raising the notes other than those in the natural key would be written as IIb7b9 or IVsus4, etc.

This format is used for both Classical and more commonly Jazz (at least in the States, the UK may have a different usage)

had to do it, obligatory.. spent yesterday collating as much chord data as i could, testing it all out.. and chucked it all out.

"5ths down are stonger than 5ths up?" wtf? lean in close, smell my stinky balls, give me ten dollars and i'll tell you the next one..

if i were proud, i'd be proud to be an idiot. or maybe i just prefer random sequences. ~ my loss.

Well I have always respected what the ears tell us so that's good too. I try to forget what I spent so much time learning whenever I am improvising.

yes, i think chord progression is a fascinating study and i think you're all terrific for doing it.
