Hi,
Can anyone point me to the differences between Traktor DJ and Traktor DJ Studio? Any opinions on either, and whether I should go for one of the above or something else? Does anyone know if either allows you to host VST effects?
Thanks
Ben
PS. If anyone's selling 'studio' second hand, I'd be interested.

Just a side-note (slightly off topic):
Atomix Virtual DJ has better features (imo) and some skins that are easier to work with than traktor dj, but traktor has better timestretch (but way suckier beat-lock).
I've heavily demoed both softwares
But no, I never got around to buy the hercules dj console... :/

Studio has 2 major advantages, which may or may not be of use to you:
1) It allows midi control of nearly everything. Tracktor DJ doesn't have midi control at all (not even the crossfader), so you HAVE to use the the gui to control the program
2) Studio allows you to set many more loops (DJ only has one loop point per song, set dynamically) and cue points (again, only one cue point in DJ). I'm not sure if you can set an infinite number of loop/cue points in Studio, but its probably more than anyone would ever need.

Traktor DJ admittedly doesn't have MIDI control, but the keyboard shortcuts are great and allow for fine control with the shift key for example. I find the keyboard setup in DJ quite intuitive, and you can set lops, change EQ and nearly everything else all with keys. And the filter is a lot of fun too
Also, for some stupid reason you can't use 2 soundcards in Studio version, only Mulit-Out for monitor/main. This to me is ridiculous, given that the cheaper DJ version has more options for soundcard setup.
Other options:
* Mixvibes Pro (by FAR the most flexible and powerful DJ software)
* DJ SS from Myxoft
* Atomix/Virtual DJ (same line, differnt features)
In my opinion Traktor DJ is the clear winner for the price, but if you need more advanced features try Mixvibes Pro.
One last comment, although NI have done good work with their DJ products, they are lagging behind with regard to FX and other trimmings. Frankly, you can get much better options than Traktor Studio for the same or less money.
Good luck finding what you need Ben

Hi,
Thanks very much for all the responses. That's a shame that Traktor DJ doesn't let you use MIDI controllers. Also, I appreciate all the other suggestions, but I'm afraid I'm going to go with Traktor, because its the 'industry standard' (so far as there is one). You can get the download, non-studio version of Traktor DJ for 35 euro - which is pretty good, I reckon. I'll try that and see how I get on. It's mainly so that I can do some basic DJing at parties, should I feel the wish to.
Thanks
Ben

Thats why i got Traktor DJ. It may not be the most advanced DJ package, but its simple, covers all the basics for DJing, and is very easy and extremely fun to use.
In my extensive test of several packages, its the most immediately fun to use, and at that price its really no loss if you upgrade to something better in the future.
You'll certainly get your 35euro worth out of it!

Quicy's right about that. The keyboard setup is quite effective and the filters are excellent!!! Yeah the scratch presets are quite fun.SecondSkin wrote:Quicy's right about that. The keyboard setup is quite effective and the filters are excellent!!! I think that sadly some people overlook Traktor DJ as a toy purely because its cheap and overshadowwed by Studio version.
Thats unfair tho, because what fairly simple tools it does provide work well, are easy to control and offer a very easy and funw ay to mix. Don't forget the mix recording too, this is hardly found in any other software. I'm referring to recording the actual mix and your control movements, so if you make a mistake when recording a mix, you can stop, go back and try again. This is a very powerful tool when you are learning.
Another thing worth bearing in mind - often old copies can be picked up very cheap on ebay, i've seen them for only £10 in the past.

Without MIDI it's pretty hard to dial two controls at the time - you'll only have the cross as your mixing tool.

Disagree. I did some real nice tricks using just keyboard and occasionally mouse. Changing loops sizes on the fly, altering filters, using EQ kill switches etc.pakana wrote:Without MIDI it's pretty hard to dial two controls at the time - you'll only have the cross as your mixing tool.
MIDI is nice though
Just look at the price, for 35euro download version, its a bargain, hardly dents the wallet really.

MIDI can't replace the qwerty keyboard completely... them qwerty kills are actually cool!
But I'm talking about stuff like EQing both decks simultaneously or filtering while crossing, which might or might not be important to some Traktor DJs.
