I have the impression that devs sometimes consider things that actually make this or that hardware unit special as "faults" and try to smooth them out.

Can't say much about 303 because I never owned one, but this is my impression from the discussions about Virus and some other (but great) old hardware.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

I think Urs from u-he wrote once that it's a consideration which "faults" are attractive for the people, and which are not. Noise, for example, is mostly not modelled, while everything in regards of saturation in the signal path or filter is very important. IMO, the clicking is also a vital part, but, YMMV.

Doubt it. There's never been a last and final word in emulating other synths in the past. Just look at Diva -> Monark/Legend.

Also, if you listen closely to the comparison here: https://www.acidvoice.com/tb_303_vst_pl ... ftware.htm Where's the transient click the real thing has? Once again about any soft synth emulation fails to model that. It's a detail, but, it's prety apparent when you listen on headphones (and, frankly, i wonder why many devs miss stuff like that).
They just tweaked the audio engine for extra 1% accuracy in the latest 3.2.1 update. I recently read someone say Monark sounds identical to the Model D NI has in their offices. Both Legend and Monark are good to have IMO.

Speaking of last word emulations Gforce did it for the OSCar, Waldorf did it for the PPG Wave 2.3, TAL did it for the Juno 60, XILS did it for the VP-330, Arturia did it for the NED Synclavier, U-he did it for the Prophet 5 and Audiorealism has definitely done it for the TB-303. I won't be looking for future emulation attempts at any of these synths.

AnX wrote: Wed Aug 28, 2019 8:39 am also, my 303's didnt have any clicks
Hmm... might differ from machine to machine then? (Although i'm doubtful) I definitely can hear a click in the attack phase in the examples from the Acid Voice page. And on most of the other analogs i heard in person (Jupiter-8) or in sound demos.
You serious? What's next? Maybe emulation of this disgusting aliasing in JP8000 plugin? Oh wait...

The first thing I would do would be extermination of those awful clicks :P

Dolphin, TyByX, ABL3, Venom, VirtualS and TN303 seems to have clicks (more or less) in audio demos on this website.

Monark is amazing. Love it. Every time i listen to a Model D on Youtube, i'm pretty stunned how close Monark sounds to that.

Abl 3.2.1 has some audio engine tweaks making it even more authentic .
It's the best emulation so far , most emu's fail when the accent is involved

That sounds nothing like a 303 to me.

Well, TB 303 is more than a osc and a filter. Not enough knobs to tweak.

Totally agree.
More BPM please

Yep. And it can't be close anyhow without the internal sequencer.. :tu:

Can you guys get crackbox working?
Doesn't show up in my Ableton 10. (64 bit)

I suppose you could always do something crazy like I've been trying, using HY-Plugins SeqCollection2 for the sequencer portion and trying to build the sounds myself in a general-purpose synth :)

FWIW, I don't really know about realism comparisons as I've never used the hardware version, but soundwise Phoscyon seems to have the best sound of the dedicated emulations I've tried - ABL3 is also pretty good but to me sounds somehow "flatter," especially as the resonance ramps up.

Post

There are all kinds of ways I guess.
Avenger has some nice acid sounds and I use the Avenger sequencer too to sequence other acid synths. I use seqcollection2 too.

Still the Roland vst is still my preferred option. I visited all kinds of emulations but ultimately just the Roland vst is all that I would need. If they sold it like a regular vst, I'd buy it immediately.

Post

There can never be a perfect emulation because even 2 hardware units sound differently.
