As I said above, I have most of the UA plugs: a few bought secondhand, but the majority bought on PA intro or sale with $75 vouchers.

Let’s say Lion is $299 list and 40% off on intro (making $179), and the UA “micro” sub is priced midway between the Maag ($6) and the Brainworx ($13), that would mean perhaps a year and a half before it’s cost me the same purchasing on discount. Presumably UA will release another plug in that time frame, and so the counter would be reset, and so on.

299, wow... what an unreal amount for these days.

I’m reminded of the current plight of “owners” of perpetual licenses for Acustica N3 and the Aurchitect/Audiofile Engineering plugs. Also McDSP’s lack of feature-parity for their Windows plugs, or Samplemagic’s effort at development: https://www.samplemagic.com/product-listing/8/plugins

“Ownership” of a license is hardly security when things go wrong with your software tools.

As an “owner” of Aurchitect licenses, I concur. Damn shame what happened to that company.

What a tragedy that befell Evan Olcott.

Of course the most obvious ownership issue is the current resale value of most PA and Waves plugins. If you can’t “sell”, there’s no advantage to “owning”, AFAICT.

But there is no "counter."
You can rationalize it however you want (and these companies will give you many different creative ways to think about it), but anytime you are a part of a subscription you are simply transferring some portion of your earnings to another entity indefinitely (until you decide to stop doing that).
Regardless of how much value you recieve from them, you will pay up every month. Straight out of your bank account. Your employer pays you. You pay them. Every month.

It is an arrangement that disproportionately benefits the company over the consumer. With traditional sales, you choose what you want, when you want it. Here, you wait for new things and counters to reset and years to pass by to validate your investment. You inevitably end up paying for things you don't use and that you don't want. And it's all to create the illusion that you are receiving more value than you are paying for. But it's the opposite.

And I apologize for further derailing this thread with (somewhat) off topic chatter.

I am very much looking forward to the release of Lion. It looks like it has set itself apart in a very crowded field. Can't wait to find out if that is true or not.

Which brings the question: When will it be released? Is there an ETA already?

Probably no earlier than 18th September. The previous date was 4th September and we've been told to expect a 2 week delay, while NI validates it for NKS. Could take longer though following the recent announcement of NI's restructuring.

That seems like a weird reason to delay such a highly anticipated release. NKS users are probably a very small percentage of the potential user base. And couldn't NKS support be part of an update when it's ready?

Personally, I am an NKS user and even to me it's not a make or break feature. It's not even really all that useful on such a complex, modern synth to be honest.

Yeah...see...how do I say this diplomatically? Michael may be too polite to say it this way, and I'm just an end-user speaking out of turn, so take it with a grain of salt but: Plugin Alliance doesn't do quick updates. So the options were probably "wait 2 weeks and do it all at once" or "release now, and make NKS users wait months and months and months for a feature that was otherwise ready to go on day 1."

Hope that UA will eventually escape from the PA prison.

Their first ETA was April / May:

Native Instruments blessed our current build for NKS compatibility, so release is very close. Less than two weeks.
