Logic 7 on your PC! OSX on x86 by www.cherryos.com

Hi K-V-R,
Having been forced by emapple to watch the decay of Logic 5.5.1 on my PC, (the greater that 1 Gig memory error - arrgh!), I was delighted to have read that a small Hawaiian company - http://www.cherryos.com - are in beta with a G4 emulator for the x86 architecture.
Apparently the emulator runs software at 80% efficiency and will be initially released for about 50 dollars!
I recently tried running multiple instances of the Waves IR1 plugin on a dual 2Ghz G5 versus a 3.2Ghz Pentium4 laptop. I was able to run 12 instances on the Mac and 18 on the PC laptop (Dell 9100). This would support Cherry OS's claim that OSX runs faster on a top of the range PC than a mid-priced Mac.
I know that many on you may have tried the PearPC emulation (visit http://www.hackaday.com if you want instructions on how to hack an Xbox to run OSX!) however CherryOS claims that this is the first efficient emulation.
I not sure if this is all Vapor or not but I thought I'd get K-v-R on the case.
Long live choice!

sounds very interesting, though of course theres the question of drivers for your pc hardware eg soundcard.

It's more a question of drivers for the emulation I think... And whilst Coreaudio supports low latency as standard, I'd be dubious about the VM latency/CPU spikes if it's using JITC to achieve its efficiency. If this only gets Apple to release OS X for x86 (or start development of Logic on Windows again - yeah right) then it's still a great achievement.
EDIT: just noticed:
"Peripheral Resources
CherryOS has access to all the system’s resources including firewire and usb ports, the CD-ROM drive and the PCI/PCMIA Bus."
That would suggest it's capable of *very* low latency operation

Yea, but I wont be able to use my RME cardbus and Mulitface will I, or will I

The statement I quoted above would suggest you would, at least if the RME has OS X drivers (which I think it does?).CreepJoint wrote:Yea, but I wont be able to use my RME cardbus and Mulitface will I, or will I

80% efficiency... that's much but probably not enough for music apps, don't you think?...

erm...3.2Ghz to 800Mhz dosen't sound like 80% performance. oh well, had me interested for about 30secs.CherryOS has been tuned for performance. You can expect to get about 80% of your processors power when working in the Apple Environment. For example a 3.2ghz P4 would run as fast as a 800 MHz G4 machine.

Maybe they're overstating their case a little, but it should be very usable. You are aware that an 800MhZ Mac is much faster than an 800MhZ PC?ambe wrote:erm...3.2Ghz to 800Mhz dosen't sound like 80% performance. oh well, had me interested for about 30secs.CherryOS has been tuned for performance. Yes i know mac processors are faster in equivalent Mhz but not by that much. 2GHz of processing power is going to hurt to those who thought they would be able to use Logic 7 on it. For all those who still want logic on their pc, i think its about time to move on.griels wrote:Maybe they're overstating their case a little, but it should be very usable.
