roman.i wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2019 11:11 pm Hey, some of you suggest getting the iLoud monitors with the 3 inch woofer,
but the frequency range, especially in low range that it produces comparable for example with Yamaha HS5,
which is down to around 50hz.
The question is how the smaller woofer helps to avoid bass issues, does it really matters if the 50Hz wave comes from a 3 inch speaker or 5 inch speaker?
Thanks
The OP struggles with a very small room. I am not an expert myself but did quite a bit of reading about room acoustics (somebody who understands this better than me might want to chime in). But in order to get a good representation of a tone at a certain frequency, the room needs to have dimensions equal to at least half of the wave's wavelength. A 50Hz wave has a wavelength of about 22 feet, so the room would need have at least 11 feet of space for the wave to properly develop. And even then you need to acoustically treat the room to avoid all the nasty room resonances. At 8.5 feet the room will not allow 50Hz waves to properly propagate anyway.

Then that's exactly what I thought, why anyone would prefer a smaller speaker instead of bigger one if the bigger one fits the room and both are near field? Bigger woofer has wider stereo image.
I'm talking about iLoud vs. HS5.

As I said I tested a bunch of them in a properly treated studio today, even with my head in the speaker, the diference is staggering.

The iLoud MTM seem very interesting indeed, and is my next port of call :-)

The iLouds are quite astonishing in what they can produce. These are not your regular 3 inch speakers. And the MTMs add a self calibrating circuitry that can adjust to the room acoustics. For such a small space they are the best option imho.

I had a punt on reverb for a pair of iLoud MTM, but my offer was turned down, then I saw Amazon is selling them for a fairly decent price, only it states, ships within '1-2 MONTHS', fulfilled by Amazon?

Will it be easier to find a correct placement for bass with Adam A3X + Sub7 rather than Adam A7X?
I mean if it's possible to place the Sub7 in any place in the room, doesn't it help to resolve bass null / room mode issues?

In a small room a (one) Subwoofer can work better than 2 monitors with a big sub cones (that the correct term?). What I mean is: better get a set of smaller speakers and one Subwoofer than 2 oversized monitors where (basswise) you don't need a Subwoofer. That's at least my experience. Maybe because it's only one place where the bass is coming from, so you don't have to deal with 2 places where bass does can get problematic (=walls around your monitors). I personally would recommend for you to get a set of Neumann KH 120's. Bassport is to the front, which usually is better in small rooms where you can't place the monitors far away from the wall. Also they go down to 40Hz, which is pretty low (when I first heard em I thought there where hooked up to a Subwoofer). For really checking the bass /sub you could either use headphones or buy a Subwoofer to get those -40hz region covered.
I worked on Techno and Trap music with the Neumann KH 120's and the linearity and especially clarity and depth on those where amazing!

Some say that some speakers are designed to be placed near walls and some others not designed for that.
While reading the manuals, Yamahas HS needs to be placed at least 1.5m from the wall, while Genelecs can be actually be close to a wall as long as the port behind has enough space to work.
Is there any explanation for this? What's so special in Genelec that allows to put them near the wall?

In a small room, speakers with deeper low-frequency extension (regardless of their size) will excite more room modes that just make it harder to get an accurate sound without acoustic treatment. Especially with ported speakers, the time domain is affected, not just the frequency domain. Also with 2-way designs there will always be some compromises between the woofer's bass and midrange performance, and larger woofers are more prone to directional "beaming" at higher frequencies, which means they won't necessarily have a better stereo image.

I'd highly recommend Mike Senior's "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" - especially Using Nearfield Monitors, Supplementary Monitoring and Low-End Damage Limitation chapters - to get a handle on why going for deep bass response from ported speakers in a small, untreated room is not a recipe for success. DSP in some speakers can address some of the frequency domain issues, but AFAIK (at least in the lower price range) won't touch more persnickety time domain problems.

I'm in similar situation like the topic starter, my room is about 10 meters, finally I came to conclusion that my room needs a pair of small active monitors and a small sub woofer.

Here are some options:
Genelec 8010A + Subwoofer 7040A
or
Adam A3X + Sub7
or a twice cheaper option
KRK RP4 or 5 + Sub8

What do you suggest?

Having used Genelec 1029A + 1091A in a smallish room for 10 years with good results, I would reccomend getting the Genelecs ...

Well I'm still deciding on which monitors to get, and so bought HS7's as a secondary pair while I ponder and look for places to demo others on the list including iLoud MTM.

I loved the Adam A77X and felt I could work "in the speaker" with it in mono, but won't decide until I've heard the others or an irrisistable sale price catches my eye :-)
