Very interesting!
KEL Audio came about because I wanted to offer an alternative. Our first microphone is the unique HM-1. It sounds great but we won't say it sounds “better” than other low-cost condenser mics. (And no ... it doesn't sound "just like a U87.") Rather, it sounds "different." In other words, our goal is to help you expand your sonic pallette – and your creative potential – at a price so low it doesn’t make sense not to try an HM-1.
Until the end of the year, folks in Canada or the US can buy it for $69 USD, including shipping. I'm tempted to get one at that price. Even if it's crappy, it will still have some kind of interesting sound... won't it?

One warning: the website looks terrible in Mozilla/Firefox. I sent an email to let him know.

Checked out the site, interesting. Couldn't figure out if that was in Canadian funds though.

It's not. They also need to work on their payment pages! Unless you're well-versed in how to be sneaky on the internet, it's damn difficult to figure out if the payment processing is secure! I had to copy URLs out of the source to GET to the payment page, as well as to see if it was secure!

I think they may be in need of my services as a web programmer... or at least someone who likes to point out flaws in other peoples' websites!

cool a canadian made mic...I just might have to save up for this

Us Canucks always come up with little shitbox gadgets... The Sackbutt, the McCleyvier, Electrix, MIDI Solutions - we're just full of piss sometimes. ;)

Cool looking device Pough, I'd be curious to see how it sounds. Judging by the tradmark Canadian humbleness in description - I wouldn't be surprised it gives a nice warm 50's nostalgia to it? :?

Buy it before it goes the way of the Arrow. ;)

Try to post your results before Jan1 2005 when the price goes up.

Well, here's the first result: a clarification!
Thanks for ordering a mic. But I must be up front, though we are based in Winnipeg, the HM-1 is made for us in China. I am not at liberty to publish the name of the company but I can say that it is not based in Shanghai and it does not presently make mics for any other north american companies (as far as I am aware). It is a relatively new privately owned company with a very modern plant and over 25 professional engineers on its R&D staff.
So it's not Canadian-made, but it's still a Canadian company flogging them, and flogging them with a hell of a lot more honesty than most other companies. He offered to let me cancel my order just because I might be disappointed and feel misled!

with that mic, geese and ice hockey you guys are all set - you'll be a proper country in no time...

Pff. As if Canadians will ever be proper.

Looks like my Red5 mic

I got a 'Shanghai Surprise' once in Montreal.

Damn little Chinese kitten cost me $200! :-o

So the mic is still probably a good deal? A good Chinese in the hands of a Canadian, I think we know how to handle them best. :hihi:
