Funny, I can make mixes either dark or bright using Ozone, depending on how I implement its tools. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

No, you are doing great and found the EQs ;) But in direct comparison with Elevate (at least with the Ozone limiter in V7), when pushing it hard, Elevate delivers cleaner and stronger highs and mids in my experience due to the multiband structure. Not saying that that is always better or anything, just that I can see why people would call Ozone "muffled" in direct comparison.

Ozone has come along far from an okay tools version 5 to becoming closer an closer to pro studio quality. The latest version 8 seems like a huge improvement in sound quality a bit more refined EQ and warmer overall.
It sounds good if you don't compare with anything else out there but I have a few sets of mastering tools including Fab Filter, Elevate, Tokyo Dawn, Hornet and Melda the result from Ozone is the least cleaner and smoother still far behind from these other developers. I do care a lot about the sound quality over all-in-one convenience.

I master this song using elevate:

And then FabFilter Pro-L2 steps in :tu:

No, not really. I try to avoid EQing at the mastering stage. I'm talking saturation, dynamics, balancing the stereo field and what have you. I tend to have a conservative approach towards mastering, I don't expect it to do all that much, I don't expect it to fix a poor mix, and I tend not to push limiters to extremes, because THAT sound drives me nuts, no matter how "transparent" people claim it is.

I love Ozone and Neutron. My hearing has continued to deteriorate dramatically in recent years, to the point where I no longer feel confident in my abilities to deliver a decent mix on my own. The AI assistants and visual helpers in these programs allow me to still arrive at a halfway decent mix. Probably not a fantastic mix, but something acceptable, and way better than I could achieve on my own. It kinda sucks to be me now, but hey, at least I'm not totally out of the game. I don't love their frequent and somewhat expensive upgrades, but I consider them essential tools to my ongoing music making.

There's so much overlap in these products, I would really like a comprehensive presentation to understand why every tool has a slightly different eq and comp. But it does make sense for a mastering tool to have a per-track instance so it can make cleaner adjustments. I'm just looking forward to hearing the marketing speak to explain how Ozone Track Majestificator is not just slim Neutron with a few randomly different controls.
My guess is that real time instrument separation will come from some sort of demasking tool for the master bus. Kind of like how Gullfoss can intelligently increase separation or demask instruments when placed on the stereo bus. The current version, Ozone 8 can already communicate with per track instances of Neutron 3 for mastering purposes.

Personally I think there is enough distinction between Neutron and Ozone. The one I'm not so sure about is Nectar as it overlaps quite a bit with Neutron.
RX7 already has this so my guess is that they’ll use the same algorithm

The sound gets brighter and a little harsh as you push them I'd still rather use a vast collections of plugins. There's no magic pills for me unless you want your mix to sound like everybody else's.
Pass..
I've found it depends a lot on the Limiter mode/algorithm. For me it defaults to IRC IV Modern, which tends to sound a bit harsh to my ears. I usually use IRC III Balanced or Pumping since it seems to fit the style of my tracks better. Also, I tend to insert a master bus compressor before Ozone with about 4 dB of GR, since Ozone does seem to sound better when it isn't being pushed as hard. Of course I also use compressors on most buses as well. Chipping away at the dynamic range a little at a time tends to sound better than just slamming the track straight into a brickwall limiter.
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

Yes you're right. Hopefully they will tune it further for mastering.

I hope they will have an automatic de-mask feature.

Ditto - well the full suite actually

I also consolidated lots of single products to the full suite about 6 months ago (wrote to support and they gave me a really good deal, much better than the advertised upgrade)

Izotope upgrader their software a lot (which is good, no one is forced to upgrade) but sometimes the new user process are great dals and the upgrades expensive for a few new features, like many I assume, I just upgrade every 2 or 3 years and then its worth it.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

And that's why they spam like crazy. Just like Line6 did when I had a UX2 a long time ago. I eventually blocked Line6. I had enough of their spam and eventually got another email so I will never ever give to them again.
