Hey,

I just had a little thought. I wonder what makes a preset for a synth a "pro" patch, in these sense that its worth being commercially sold.

First off let me say i am not trying to slander the commercial preset designers, i love some of the stuff i have heard, worthwhile.

But also, I have heard commercial presets that seem very simple and stuff i could do.

I am not particularly interested in making presets to sell or anything, i just wondered how a preset can be defined as having commercial potential or not. Pro-sounds sell banks, but also give away free ones. Are the free ones of a lower quality?

I'd suggest them to tease their clients with a few of the best ones. Like the drug dealers do...

To me an interesting patch uses the specific options of the synth (not just 'moog basses'...). It's well designed in questions of modulations (velos, wheel, pitch, etc.) and underlines the character of the sound (e.g. with a breath sound at start of a brass patch).

In addition, I like suprising (that does not necessary mean 'pro') patches which are more or less tricky. This applies to e.g. FM7 presets that often show a broad range from crap to cuteness.

I think it might be similar to amateur and "pro" quality music.. its in the fine details ?

I'd say it's whether you sell them for money or not. Nothing else to it. Things that you have to shell out money for are synonymous with being professional in many circles.

you get propatches from prosounds and amateurs from patcharena. there are sites with pros and there are sites with amateurs and housewifes and whatnot.
