DS-404 problems in Cubase SX

Now this one is wierd, so far I have all the Muon synths and not had any trouble, until now.



I have only tried using DS-404 twice, both times caused problems. These were:

1 Cubase SX froze after trying several patches (on default song, nothing else loaded)
2 Few days later, tried the DS-404 in a current project, when I removed it from the rack and all audio distorted, as if played through a guitar amp, although no settings were changed! Closing SX re-starting and re-loading the project was the only way to resore the audio to normal. The only other VSTi's loaded were SR-202 and LM7, with Waves C1 on the master plugin rack.

SX is at version 1.02 with all current patches (ie the VSTDX.DLL and the newest MIDI plugin wrapper).

Any ideas?

You're right, it is weird.

Tests here show that DS404 is stable as a brick in SX running under XP, so first of all, have you been able to repeat any of these problems?

This is very important so we can see if we're looking at a bug or just some weirdness connected to your machine.

Secondly, did you check your Cubase.log? if a plugin crashes it normally writes a logfile entry and that gives us the offending plugin and the crash address. The logfile is located in your Cubase directory and is just a simple log file. I'd appreciate a copy of that via email if it's got a DS404 entry in it.

No log file, Cubase did not come up with any errors, it just stopped without any responce at all. Up to now I have had no issues with my machine, its running XP Pro, is updated frequently and generally runs like clockwork. The only thing unusual that I can think of is the audio setup (Terratec EWS88MT as the main DAW card, with a Tascam US-428 used as a controller and used for system sounds).

The machine itself is an Athlon XP with 512MB DDR RAM, the display type is an ATI Radeon dual head card (7500 chipset I think), although I have had no issue with any other plug (Including Muons own range and the CM range).

I'll try later with the existing project to see if anything re-occurs

Don't know if it might be part of the problem but there are some patch problems posted at the Computer Music site. There are fix proceedures there too.

Can you repeat the problem? are there any particular steps that you can take that always make the problem happen?

If it just happens the once and you can't ever get it to happen again it'd be hard to call it a bug and there's nothing for us to test.

One thing that springs to mind is that SR202 conflicted really badly with Matrox cards. Did you have problems with SR202 as well?

Never had a problem with any Muon product untill this, although it could be related to the patch problem posed at the CM site (I havn't gone there yet) as I was just randomly loading and trying out patches.

Not been able to re-create the audio distortion problem (possibly a one off), but again, randomly auditioning patches and generally 'playing around', the computer froze and Cubase was locked solid!

I'll go over to the CM site over the weekend and see if it's related.

Loading lots of patches one on top of the other can cause your machine to run out of memory, that's the only thing that springs to mind. Although you have 512mb RAM, when you account for Windows XP, Cubase etc. you might still have run out of memory if you load in too many patches.

DS404 uses a RAM buffer to speed up loading - so if you load a 100mb patch off disk it will create a 100mb RAM buffer first to load the file into, and then it will extract the patch data from the buffer. So, just at the point of loading while it's working, it'll need 200mb of RAM and then 100mb thereafter.
