Great Albums from Bands Past Their Prime?

A few years ago I came across a review of an album by Fastball which said it was the best thing they had ever done. It made me realize that there are probably a lot of good albums put out by bands that are well past their commercial peak that never get heard beyond fandom. Which albums do you think would qualify?

Failure's recent output comes to mind... 'The Heart is a Monster' and 'In the Future Your Body Will Be the Furthest Thing from Your Mind' were the first things to come to mind.

Cheap Trick - quite a few of their past few have been pretty darn good - “We’re All Alright!” I thought especially good (listen at least twice). I mean, the lyrics are still straight from the teenage heart, but the licks and hooks are there. For me, they went straight down hill post Heaven Tonight, especially in the 80’s when the label wouldn’t let Nielsen write all the tunes - yet the ones he wrote then sucked, so, I guess they were right. Their very best: In Color.

Yeah, but they were kind of in their prime when they recorded it.Jbravo wrote: Mon Oct 14, 2019 4:51 pm Pull by Mr Mister. Recorded in 89-90, finally released in 2010

Yes, The Joke's last couple have been pretty good, let down a bit by so-so production. Here's a great example -
Sad Lovers & Giants released their first new album in 15 years last year and I reckon it is far and away their best. This is the second best song from it -
Then there was Die Krupps' Machinists of Joy album, which is really, really good. A lesson in how good EBM should sound -
I also think KMFDM's more recent albums have been quite good. THey've diversified their sound quite a bit and it works really well -
A band who will never record again whose last album was a real return to form was the Cars' last album, Move Like This. It cam e24 years after Door to Door and was a return to their earlier New Wave style. It's a ripper -
Last one that comes to mind is Buzzcocks self-titled album from 2003. Most bands do a self-titled album early in their careers but I reckon Buzzcocks saved it for their best album in decades, as good as any of their early stuff -

Not really, the hits had dried up which is why their label decided not to release the album

Since I started this, I should mention that the last two Garbage albums have been pretty good. But then again, what would you expect from a band whose lead singer is a Terminator?
