Hey,
I want to start my own record label to self publish my songs and share them on platforms like Bandcamp Spotify and Discogs.
How do I do that and what are the costs?

A friend told me about Distrokid. It might be a way for you to go - less complicated and, if you do sell stuff, apparently you keep it all. While they distribute, you still have to market to let people know you’re there, but you’d have to do that anyway, no matter where your “record label” is located. Tip: if you fill out their “form” and get your password but don’t commit, they’ll send you an email a day or two later for 30% off the first year (it’s $19.99 per year, unlimited songs/albums). And if you wait even further, they’ll offer you 50% off that first year.

I use Emubands for distribution to Spotify, Apple, etc ... they charge £50 per album. Emubands collects any royalties from sales. You keep your copyright and 100% of any royalties. For Bandcamp, you have to set it up yourself. They collect sales and pay you 80% iirc.

Maybe the OP might be thinking there are people on here that have experience in this area? Just a thought...risome wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2019 1:03 pm DYOR theres plenty of info on the internet regarding this topic, the choice is yours..let me help you with that

you dont need a label to self publish yourself unless you want it for vanity reasons. but if you want a label so can hand out business cards and have a site and social entity that is associated with something other than your person. its very easy.
go to the local government business registration office and open a self proprietorship business. they are much cheaper than a corp. give it a name. pay the fee. make sure you enter "music", "record label", you probably want to select to be listed under "culture and arts" sector, and you have your own record label business.
after that, you go to your local music association and register with them and give them the number they gave you at the government office. you are registered with them as alabel, pay you fee and bam. you are a label and can sign other artists including yourself.
you got to remember, this sort of thing has been going on since caveman days. unsigned authors and musicans have been selling their creative output from trunk of their cars forever. who buys it and how much they sell is another story.
If it were me, I wouldn't waste money on registration fees. spend the money and time and effort figuring out how modern musicians, artists, songwriters build their followings using the new channels such as social media, events, twitch and youtube and what not. your problems in life is not that you dont have a label. your problem is that the type of listener who likes to listen to what you make doesn't know where you are or that you even exist.

You don't need a record label of your own. Most probably you won't have enough streams or sold records that it'd bring any real income. Just use some platform like distrokid or landr that will spread your tracks around the world and collect the money for you.
Live shows are where the real money is. Rest is just promotion.
