Mr. Slater's Parrot wrote: One way to get the job done in Sonar is to use Chainer wrapped with DirectiXer.

You make an instance of Chainer in Sonar and load your VSTi in the Chainer instance. You can then do midi-learn on any control in the VSTi.
Do you have to explicitly midi-learn each control before it will be recorded?

That is a clever workaround.

If you use Chainer, then you need to tell Chainer how you want to map the midi cc's to the VSTi controls. Chainer lets you do this either with midi learn or by directly selecting the cc number from a pick list. But, yes, you do need to map a cc to each control. OTOH, Chainer lets you save settings so that you can do the cc mapping once for each of your VSTi's and then just reload the settings from then on.

Also, you can use Cakewalk's adapter if you do all of your recording using the midi keyboard controller. DirectiXer is needed, though, if you want to record using the VSTi GUI because DirectiXer has a switch that allows midi events from the VSTi GUI to be fed back to the host.

If you have a VSTi that has default cc bindings and if you want to record only from your midi keyboard controller, then you could just use the VSTi directly (without Chainer) and not have to do any midi cc bindings, of course.

Erm, it's (usually) a tad easier than that. Arm the track that the VSTi (wrapped as DXi) feeds its audio out to for Record Automation and the actions of the knobs in the GUI will be recorded as DX8 automation in that track. This possibily doesn't work with all synths, but it works with a lot of them that I've tried it with (also for FX in the FX bin in the same way).

That method only works if you insert the (wrapped) VSTi into the effects bin of the audio track (the old method) instead of using Sonar's Synth Rack.

It also has the limitation that you have to record the UI control motions in a separate pass from recording the midi notes. kuniklo said, originally, that he wanted to play the instrument and tweak the knobs at the same time. In order to do that, you have to record midi cc's as I suggested because Record and Record Automation can't run at the same time in Sonar (unless there is some magic that I don't know about -- let me know if there is :) ).

Also, if your VSTi doesn't support midi learn, Chainer will do the job for it.

If you are willing to use the effects bin instead of the Synth Rack and if you are willing to record the control automation separately from the midi note data and if you don't need to add midi-learn to a non-midi-learn VSTi, then the above method will do the job.

Apologies for the OT -- just trying to clear up a side issue.

Putte, you know how much I love logic, but I don't think you realize how many incredible sounds you are missing out on mac! :(
Just out of curiosity - what specifically lured you back? I know there are a lot more options on the PC but I'm wondering which ones were so important to you.

For myself, I'd very much miss z3ta but I can't think of anything else I really couldn't do without.

Rhino, z3ta+, Superwave (yes, i just adore them), Ugo's synthedit stuff, Exciton2, Eve, Wusikstation, Pentagon 1, sfz+, neurosynth pack. I use all of these consistently every day and don't know how i managed without :-o
Good list. Makes sense. z3ta in particular is very nice.
