Announcing Gradients

Hi KVR Users,
I'm happy to announce Gradients -- a midi sequencer aimed at composing with timbre.
Gradients aims to help musicians compose with continuous parameter changes with the same degree of comfort that traditional DAWs focus on composing with notes or audio clips.
It's a standalone program that can be used with whatever sound-generating program you like.
The basic workflow is as follows:
- midi map knobs within Gradients to parameters within your audio-generating program
- save combinations of knob values in frames
- sequence the frames (changes between frames can be discrete or interpolated)
The program also includes an option to send midi notes at the start of a sequencer segment, intended to trigger clip launchers or similar.
Here it is being used with VCV Rack:
If you're interested in using Gradients or have any questions, please let me know below. I'm planning on making it generally available for a reasonable price.
Best,
Brian

Hmm, that sounds new.bgrc wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2019 6:13 pm Gradients aims to help musicians compose with continuous parameter changes with the same degree of comfort that traditional DAWs focus on composing with notes or audio clips.
What interfaces does it have: VST, AU, LV2, DX or anything else?
What composition philosophy does it have: Linear, pattern, or s.th. else?

It's a standalone program (not a plugin), and you map params in your audio software the same way you would a hardware midi knob controller. So, on MacOS you can send the midi over the IAC Bus and on windows you can use loopMidi or similar.enroe wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2019 9:38 pmHmm, that sounds new.bgrc wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2019 6:13 pm Gradients aims to help musicians compose with continuous parameter changes with the same degree of comfort that traditional DAWs focus on composing with notes or audio clips.

For now interpolation between frames is all linear, however I'm certainly interested in implementing customizable curves at some point.

this looks interesting. a nice way to escape the timeline. from your video it looks like a sequencing snapshots almost. but morphing? but also some automation in there?

Thanks! Will be running a beta soon and releasing as soon as it's stable.euanek wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2019 3:01 am This looks super interesting. Do you have a rough release schedule?

Yes, the basic idea is sequencing snapshots (I called them frames). You can also interpolate (morph) between frames.dayjob wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2019 3:45 am this looks interesting. a nice way to escape the timeline. from your video it looks like a sequencing snapshots almost. but morphing? but also some automation in there?

that's cool. i used to use Audiomulch this way.. sort of.. only inside audiomulch of course. sequencing snapshots or frames as you call them is really fast and powerful way to work. it's something i wish DAWs did natively.bgrc wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2019 2:26 pmYes, the basic idea is sequencing snapshots (I called them frames). Just dropping by to say that I was using this today and it's a very promising piece of software.
For anyone looking to make electronic music without dragging blocks around a screen all the time, this is amazing.
