Yeah most of the time makes no diff. When the cable happens to connect between certain stuff with slight ground loops or snakes by some strong EM source in the floor or wall, then all of a sudden it makes a diff and you have to stop and figure out "where is that hum. buzz or static coming from?".and eventually put in a balanced cable to help stop the problem.

I mean that hosa balanced cable was even less expensive than some of em suggested. Hosa are not the best but unless recent QC has deteriorated I haven't had many hosa cables go bad on me for studio usage.

I mean if the gear is wired for balanced and the balanced cable don't cost any extra then what's the problem just using balanced first try? Avoids having to switch to balanced later on when you had to debug and fix a problem you wouldn't have had to debug and fix if you had used balanced to begin with?

It would be different for me or Bert or lfm if we are deciding whether to buy a new balanced cable vs drag out one of 50 old unbalanced quarter inch cables from the old cable drawer.

Skinflintiness demands using the old cable so long as the old cable works OK.

But if you don't have an old cable drawer and you have to buy something new anyway-- If the right cable doesn't cost any more than the "almost right" cable, then why waste money buying the "almost right" cable? The "almost right" cable will probably work fine but if it doesn't then you have to put that cable in your new "old cable drawer" and go out and spend more money to get the right cable. :)

I mean, if unbalanced is so great then why don't we just rewire all our mics unbalanced while we are at it? :)

Ok, so that one will work? Sorry, I just find these cables so confusing for some odd reason, lol. I feel like I've spent more time trying to figure out what cable to use then I did with finding an audio interface, lol.

Have you seen the price? £23 for one cable is a bit pricey imho. I linked to a much cheaper, similar cable earlier in the thread.

it's not as difficult as it seems.

for instruments use instrument cables.

for speakers use speaker cables.
these can be more problematic as you may require different connectors at each end.
adapters can be had for pretty cheap though (maybe around £1).
