Well the 3 meter STEREO BALÀNCED cable I linked is only $11.29 US bux bought in USA but maybe more (or less) somewhere else. That is "typically long enough" without being ridiculous too long, and takes care of both channels for barely over a tenner.

Some stores treat cables like burger joints treat fries and drinks. They sell the burger near cost then make a thousand percent profit on the fries and the pepsi.

If he buys everything from the same store then some stores might make most of the profit off the cables and stand.

Then some other store might practically give him the cables as an extra purchase inducement. Hard to predict.

For example Sweetwater doesn't run a charity organization and I probably don't spend on average more than a couple hundred bux a year there and probly ain't a most-valued customer.

Just saying I bought the $200 midi interface and axed em to add a stupid long USB cable and they charged like $5 for the stupid long USB cable "just to be nice to the old geezer" or whatever.

I have paid as much as $40 for stupid long USB cables at the Best Buy mall store. Which was hiway robbery of course.

Do any of you know about any decent cheap visualizers? Like, small, LED ones? Every time I look them up they have a bunch of (at least in my mind) sketchy-sounding, long-named, Chinese products from eBay, lol.
I just want something simple, that looks cool, that displays sound, essentially.

Have you seen the price? £23 for one cable is a bit pricey imho. I linked to a much cheaper, similar cable earlier in the thread.

ah in that case, i do it on the computer, my host has one built in, most do i think? if not there will be a plugin available, which wont require any awkward cabling or possibly add noise to the system if it's some cheap thing.

Live has one built in ... its called Spectrum. Also, there's SPAN from Voxengo (free).

Voxengo Span I can't recommend highly enough and should buy the paid version just in gratitude cause I already got so much value out of the free version. Though the free version features are entirely adequate for my use.

It is a little weird to me setting it up for 2 channel in dual mono display mode because his input routing buttons I keep forgetting what the heck they are sposed to do.

However it is set the way I like it on the master output bus so usually comes up correctly when I load a new song template.

Yes, mine does too, I guess I was just looking for something physical, but now that you point those things out, I think I'll pass on getting one.
Any other suggestions for things I should have and/or just generally nice visual things to have?

I don't use analyzer for eye candy. Guess it would be ok for that but I was always heavily reliant on analyzer not as ear replacment but ear assistant.

Used that way for serious purpose, changing the time constants or even the vertical/horizontal size can mess you up.

Get used to hearing and seeing a certain thing. If you keep switching analyzers if one is tall narrow the other short wide, one fast the other slow, it is hard to learn to get the most use out of it.

Better to find one that works good then use it about the same size and settings all the time. There are about 3 settings I usually use with span.

what he says, ive never thought of visualisation as "cool" more a tool. different options for differing needs. eg loudness meter for checking peaks or oscilloscope for freq/shape and so on...

dont go overboard, get what you need. nothing more, that way you are not dividing your attention from the main point, the synth and learning it.
an oscilloscope will be the most handy visual tool here imo
should also be included in most hosts
