Oh well to each his own I suppose.....
The deal obviously not only in desire of tape sound, just we has a case when device can goes beyond its purpose to a large extent, if you want (here i can agree with @plexuss)
And there is many similar cases, for me it for example octavox\quadravox, which i grab just because interesting resonator+delay abilities (despite his positioned as harmoniser - frankly i don't need harmonizers at all). Or Acon Digital restoration suite, which i found interesting for spectral transformation tasks, and restoration tasks do not need for me. (The same about their Deverberate).
So, in Cassette case, if it gives something new among existing effects (exactly regardless of their classification), why not.
But, ofcourse, I would not want to belittle its ability as a casette emulator too (although I have nothing to compare with - this is first tape emulator plug that i tried) - but it really sounds like tape.

Just messing around with Cassette learning what it can do, I ran a mix through it. I discovered that the artifacts cause flanging when adjusting mix to let some source through. On this track I liked the effect of it but not enough to replace the original version. So both are up on soundcloud. The "Swirling Mix" is the one with Cassette on it.

Why would I put whole stereo mix through it? If not for some retro stuff representing cassette sound, but yeah..

This looks and sounds great. However, there are a couple of big things I'm missing. One is a desireable, but the other would be possibly more important to me than anything else.

1. Dolby - someone else already mentioned this. Especially the effect of something recorded with Dolby B, then replayed without, which to everyone's ears sounded better and damn the tape hiss.

2. Boom box record emulation. This is the biggie. Those of a certain age... ever noticed how that cheap boom box recording of the old band rehearsals actually sound great? Auto gain slamming into some cheap limiter, crunchy as hell but sounds enormous. Typically accompanied by buzz and all kinds of mechanical noises. This is the gateway to true nostalgic nirvana.

No iLok or challenge response needed for registering Cassette.
At the time of the purchase you’ll receive an e-mail containing you username and serial number.

It does not only sound well. Also the copy protection seems pita free!

Very similar yeah, different sound and GUI, Wavesfactory has more control over the FX. See my Clyp above for one comparison, though both have demos so it's best to test yourself.
Can you say a bit more about the differences? What is different between Aberrant DSP’s sketchcassette and this Wavefactory one?

What's the Spectre tube glitch? I haven't noticed anything obvious.
Changing to the tube saturation type causes an audible click. The click can also be heard when starting host playback (with tube type selected). All other saturation types are fine. Bug was confirmed by devs when I reported it.

Been hoping for a fix for a while, tho it seems they have been busy lately with Cassette - which I can't really complain about, it's a great plugin : )
Thanks for the info!

If I put this on a track that is over 45 minutes long, do I have to pause playback and turn around the cassette?

Bummer, you just made me realize this one doesn't have auto reverse functionality :scared:
Does Wavesfactory has a refund policy?

Not if you put it into C120 mode. But that mangles your audio after playing the track back too many times and brings the DAW to a jarring halt.

No, never (and I must have recorded hundreds of those tapes)
"Preamps have literally one job: when you turn up the gain, it gets louder." Jamcat, talking about presmp-emulation plugins.

I mean, the playing doesn't improve in my case...

Here's a good example. Simple Minds, 1984, recording early boom box demos of what ended up as the Sparkle In The Rain album and their migration from arty electroic music pioneers to stadium rockers. This noisy, massively compressed and distorted ambience is the last recorded moment of that older era, the track ended up pretty much synth-less in the end.

I mean wouldn't release an album like it, but to have some of that on tap...

Is it because they're boombox recordings or just more energetic arrangements that recall some of their best work from a few years earlier, though?

Simple Minds' earlier demos are often much closer to the album version, especially when you listen to Hillage's treatment of Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call or Leckie's work with them. By going overboard on bombastic, Lillywhite pretty much stripped the energy out of the songs on Sparkle in the Rain and, IIRC, the album got panned on release because of it. Book of Brilliant Things is practically a different song here and better for it IMO, possibly because it's got shades of Cabaret Voltaire going on.

Reelbus can get really grungy if you want it to... (Hint: Try chaining a few Rusty Old Tape models ;))
A well-behaved signature.
