Street musicians: do you listen to them?

Now and then we all find people making music on the streets, and sometimes they are good. Do you usually stop to listen? Do you give them money? Do you buy their cassettes/CDs when for sale?
In my case sometimes I just pass by, sometimes I spend a lot of time listening to them
and I buy their stuff. It's a beautiful alternative to all that "chart" shit. And IMO it's something we should all cherish.

I often listen to them. At Heidelberg, Germany, they sometimes aren't allowed to play for more than an hour, which might be sufficient if your repertoire isn't that big, but anyway, why that restriction???
Some are really good. Here in Hamburg there was for a long time a man who played with incredible skill on an harmonium on a market every Saturday. Classical pieces, jazzy ones, and I think he didn't get rich but many people gave money to him, as he was a true artist...
There's a road here called "Colonnaden" which is perfect for any street-musician who has a not tooooo loud instrument. The rich people walk by, a wonderful street, if anyone would be interested
.
My dream would be all or say 200 KVR-musicians on a real big place, anyone playing what she and he wants
. Don't know if we would get that much applause and money, though
.

Our subways here license performers to play in the stations - great acoustics, and really good performers as well!
But - I always hear them in rush hour, or when I'm in a rush and it's not rush hour. But I always try to give them a nod and a smile atleast.
On the streets - rarely. A scruffy hippy playing Neil Young tunes badly. But it sounds better than the constant trickle of 'change please?':( Tourist areas get good buskers here - but again, such a mob of people gathered around, I really can't enjoy their music as I would like.

I love street musicians. Always stop and listen and put some money in the hat. If possible I love to have a chat with them as well. Just make them feel that they are doing a great service. Street musicians love it when you take a photo as well. For those who sell a CD I will support. I have a collection of the weirdest stuff. For some reason a street musician often do not sound as good on the CD as they did on the street.

Yes, we have some excellent buskers here in Norwich. Everything from a Peruvian panpipe band, via string quartets playing ragtime classics, to a skiffle band complete with washboard and zoot suits!
Some excellent musicianship there, and refreshing to hear every time.
There was some senile guy who had a little puppet which he would make dance to the latest hits, which he would play on his 1985 model ghettoblaster. Don't see him any more though - think someone must have snipped his strings one day

Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

Here it's a holidays resort, so in Summer we have much more street musicians than in Winter. We had from peruvian bands to celtic harp players, including brass bands, electronica duos and country singers. But I remember many great listening moments in many other different places: from an incredible string ensemble in Munich, to a guy playing steel drums in Amsterdam, etc. They all made my life richer

I play the streets from time to time... have played in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Mainz, Düsseldorf, Münster and Recklinghausen so far and usually the money is pretty good..... usually 30€ an hour and more during the christmas time (another bonus is the free Glüwein you get when playing on the Weihnachtsmarkt).... which is cool when you're playing alone.
But yeah I listen to some of them.... but only a few, the ones I really like.... I already made some friends in the streetmusician buisness.... www.radiolukas.de for example.... I met him in Münster while we were both playing the streets

At least if he wasn't, someone else reading this will maybe think twice before going straight to Kazaa to steal.
