I'm aware you can have a set of default colours for tracks by type.
I know you can change the colours in the palette for tracks on a project basis - but can you make that palette of colours available for all projects?
I like to use grey for tracks (audio, MIDI or MIDI instrument) where I don't think I'll need them but want to keep them in case.

Two methods ..
Create or open a project that has colours like you like them and in the palette do save as default colours, or something worded close to that, not in the studio now.
Now every empty project will have colour palette and you can do the additional step if you use templates like many of us do open that template tell it to use the (new) default colours and resave that template as a template.

in the pallet dropdown there is a "store color set as default" option. However, it doesn't overwrite saved template color schemes. You would have to use the "reset to default" option after you've set up your base set.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

thanks both - I'd missed the "save as default" option in the project palette...though I think I will set it up in the templates - I hadn't thought of that!

heh, I don't remember. It took me forever to get the palette I have now ... so I'm not f'n around with a "restore factory default" to find out.

I think it's in the default track colour settings under...er..preferences? But it's not one of the colours within the palette off the toolbar when you want to colourise an individual track. well not in mine it isn't.

I don't think you need to go the drastic "restore" route, but I hear you. After all, what you really want to do is just fire it up and create.

yes I use that for the basic set up of colour by track type but I want to vary that - grey for stuff I think I won't use, red where I've noticed a problem, etc.
All sorted now following the answers above.
