If you open any SFZ file in a text editor, you will see that it is possible to have the sample files (wav, flac, mp3, etc.) in any other directory, it is not required to have them in the same directory. The filename of the sample, in the SFZ structure, can be preceded by the pathname. Exemple:

Instead of writing
sample=Lead-01.wav (meaning that the sample file is in the same directory than the SFZ file)
it is for example possible to write
sample=C:\MySynth\SampleFiles\Leads\Lead-01.wav (meaning that the sample file is at a totally different place in the computer.


It is also possible to use relative paths when a pack is distributed with its own samples files and its own SFZ files. Example:
We assume that the sfz file is this one
C:\MySynth\SFZfiles\Leads.sfz
and that we want to point this sample file
C:\MySynth\SampleFiles\Leads\Lead-01.wav

In the SFZ file we can write this:
sample=..\SampleFiles\Leads\Lead-01.wav

I know two excellent freeware tools to make oneself SFZ files from scratch or to adapt third parties SFZ files to your computer:

SFZ Designer

and

sfZed

It is very nice for example to learn to make new SFZ files using all the free packs available on Zampler's website. An excellent exercise to learn to make them at your own preferences.

Guys I just got it from the horses mouth.

Good or bad to you, the Beat Zampler homepage SFZ detail area https://www.zampler.de/#sfz is the bible in regards to what SFZ codes Zampler recognizes. Whatever tool you want to use to achieve the format is up to you. Since the subset is so limited (and precisely described) I many in fact resort to Notepad editing / touchups. Or the already mentioned SFZed Editor http://audio.clockbeat.com/sfZed.html
I am definatley rolling with it (Zampler).

Don't take it bad. It like a lot Zampler as well.

What I simply say is that it is nice to have in one's panel several tools to know (or simply to be aware of) when some things are difficult to understand (or to code) with only one tool, whatever it is, as for example juggle with the directories or with some parts of the syntax. The most important thing is to finally succeed in making the resulting files work with the preferred plugin (Zampler), isn't it ?
