So many mediocre presets - which developers deliver quality instead of quantity in 2019?

For discussion and announcements of soundware - patches, presets, soundsets, soundbanks, loop libraries, construction kits, MIDI libraries, etc.

I've never really been into synth presets, but being swamped with work recently I've had to find ways to get results for clients faster. Diving into preset developers offerings my initial reaction is that...

a) there's way too many preset products with way too many presets, and

b) the average quality and usability of a preset is dismal

Not knowing the industry players very well, are there any recommended preset makers that value quality over quantity? Who really go deep into synths to deliver something original? I'm really not at all picky about genre - a good sound is a good sound - but I'm maybe slightly more interested in new sounds than emulating the same old vintage tones.

Help appreciated!

I'm forever learning and every now and then I'll hunt through and dissect a bunch of presets for pro tips and interesting approaches.

Howard Scarr and Kevin Schroeder at team u-he are pretty hotsy totsy. Actually, the u-he store will be more discerning than a fair few other places:
https://u-he.com/products/#soundsets

But you're quite right, there is a mountain of crap to sift through. One approach is to find out who programmed your favourite patches on the synths that you like the best, and then track down a website.

Here are a few sound designers who sell packs (not trying to be exhaustive, just somewhere to start):

It really depends on the synth IMO... Sylenth1, Spire, or Synthmaster One have loads of good presets. If you're into those genres.

Novation V-Station on the other hand, good gosh... those presets are really, really bad, and you surely rather "roll your own".

i think you must choose those who was sucesesfull in music production for the first - just because producers who know how to create music, have a better vision on sound design.

Expansions for Avenger:

and of course Nexus (pure quality at least in my ears), scroll down and listen:

I also think that Xenos is some of the more talented sound designers:

It seems this guy offers his pro tips direct:

FYI everybody, his Repro packs are half price at plugin boutique until December 5th, looks like.

What i always realize with people who are successful in sound design or music production is that they have... taste. IMO, a lot of talent simply comes down to that. Being able to hit the sound spot on. Of course you need the technical know-how as well, the will to experiment, and spend a lot of time doing what you're doing, and keep the fun doing it. But, i still think taste is very important.

I would add Joseph Hollo to the ones mentioned. Also Manuel Schleis, and Nico Herz/Big Tone.
