I'm no pro but I use the 'blanket-hung-from-ceiling' method
I try to avoid the 'sss' problem by singing a bit over the mic

and then run it thru a noise gate to kill the background noise (which can be fiddly)
with a dash of verb to get some tail back
just a smidge

The only basic thing I learned about doing vocals is: If you can't sing - don't.

Can't contribute to the topic much more than that, sorry.

what not even with a star command buzzlightyear voice changer and loads of processing

Seem like you DO know what you're doing. Or atleast did the proper research. :)
Well, I have recorded a song before, but I mostly fall under the research category to be honest.

I did some similar research over the summer and typed this up during my summer holiday (how sad is that)

Not a million miles from what you said.

I like my Voxengo Voxformer a lot!

I'm no great singer, but I sing. I think that a large part of the indie community would disagree with your sentiment. I love Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips, and he isn't a great singer, he just has a great sounding voice. (see: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix). I would be careful to make any broad-brush judgements. But that's just me.

rent me

and make sure i don't use a oversensitive crap condensator mic but a simple sm58 :D

Me too. It's all about the emotion, silly!

What comments? Did you not read this part.
Now I'm particularly interested in that heavily processed pop, RnB sort of vocal. It might not be a choice for purists, who like it all to be done in one great take, with no doubletracking, autotune etc. But I like my vocals like my synths: polished and everything chiselled to perfection. I know this might not be everyones cuppa but that's taking the vocal to the extreme. If you want less polished vocals, just skip a few points
Or are you talking about point no 1.; get a good singer. Well we might have different definitions of good/great/excellent. I'm sure most opera singer are "excellent" but I still think it sounds like crap :hihi:

what about fluids?
say your singer gets thirsty in those 2 hours or 20 takes
i heard milk is bad for the voice
a little water with lemon?
just water?

Code Red Mountain Dew?
seems like alcohol would be prohibited given possible intake over 2 hours could degrade the process (unless one was extensively conditioned)
southern comfort or triple distilled vodka?

my friend who has a recording studio in his basement is constantly buying and selling and trading microphones. seems like their the vsti of the audio realm.
he provides his singer with cranberry juice

Post

Great stuff Rollasoc. Point 23 was certainly interesting :-o

Wrench: Cranberry juice eh. What if the singer doesn't like it? Do you pay them extra in order for them to drink it and tell them they can vomit when they get home

This is not a tip, but I wouldn't couldn't without my popfilter. And yes, it's worth the money to buy an "official" one. K&M does a decent popfilter for a reasonable price.

Somebody once told me to use nylon stockings worn thin, but I think they take too much of the clarity at the top.

ah singing. i keep a vaporizer, hot tea, lemon juice, water, chloroseptic spray, and more water on hand. i personally don't use any pop filters or any type of special acoustics when doing vocals. i would like to have my own vocal booth though

as far as effects go: reverb - used ever so slightly, compression of course - usually blockfish, shitloads of backing or harmonizing vocals and surround effects and panning. oh, and i love distortion on vocals sometimes as well.

i hate mixing vocals, its hard as hell to me.

anything goes as long as you don't drown vox in verb like George Michael does
