Is it possible to create popular mainstream music with only 'outdated' gear?

Of course, I'm not talking about acoustic instruments (piano, guitars, drums etc..) but I'm refering to specific synth instruments that has a strong vibe of older times.

For instance, let's say that the latest Taylor Swift/Billie Elisih/Bruno Mars/(insert any successful pop artist from this decade) album would have been produced with just Korg M1/Yamaha DX7/Roland D50, do you think it could compete with other albums that use newer technology or is it a losing battle?

Most of the actual mainstream music consumers are casuals listeners so they are more attract by nice hooks, melody and maybe vocals, but most of them are unable to discern betwin, just to say,an old DX7 or Serum,so yes you can making mainstrem music with old stuff, even pianos, guitars and ukulele ;-)

Mainstream Music sounds shite, so yes.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Take the time to find out what synths they use.
You will be surprised.
(Taylor Swift likes Mellotron and Juno 106)

If you make the next generation sound with the gear you have, then people will follow you. They'll flock to KVR, asking the question 'Is it possible to create popular mainstream music with only 'new' gear?'

Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) still sounds exquisitely hi-fi because it was arranged and mixed tastefully. Lots of stuff was made in the 80s with "better" equipment and has not dated so well.

A modern thing that history will not treat kindly is the excessive pitch quantising of vocals, and lazy harmonisation from pitch-shifting the lead vocal.

One thing to be especially careful with is the bright digital piano sounds from the synths you mentioned; these have already been over-exposed.

Should be fine - most popular music is about polishing a turd, so quality of what is recorded doesn't have to be that great.
