Nope. My first recordings were on a Tascam Portastudio. It was a pain in the ass and I wished I could have recorded in perfect quality at the time, especially after bouncing multiple times.

But a plugin gives control over the character and removes the hassle. I can have just a little bit of tape mojo if I want, without it stacking up every time I add another part. I can have the saturation without any hiss, or I can automate the hiss with an envelope follower. I can slam the saturation and compression in parallel with the clean signal, or only on the side while the mid stays clean. I can apply it to one synth voice while the rest are clean. I can use a really dirty, bandpassed, mono tape sound for the intro and then widen everything out into the main part of the song.

It's like how distortion in an amp was a bad thing until guitarists turned it into a creative tool.

Can Cassette do anything Toneboosters Reelbus can’t?

Realistically sound like a cassette.

I feel like Cassette is easier to dial in than Reelbus, instantly satisfying and never really sounds wrong. I had to fiddle with Reelbus a lot to get it where I wanted for one of the tracks I tested it on, and never really got there on the other.

So Reelbus has no model which sounds like cassette.

doesnt look like it does.
I have u-he Satin which is a reel to reel tape sim.
Have worked both with real reel to reels and real cassettes and Wavesfactory is so much spot on for being a cassette that I won't bother looping through the deck anymore because it adds no real value (aside being fun from time to time)

big tapes are much more subtle than cassettes were. They were designed to be as faithful and clean as possible - cassettes were designed to be as compact and cost-effective as possible.

Cassette can sound like a cassette much better than any plugin Ive tried. Reelbus4/Satin aren’t cassette emulations but more what professional studios would record with. While similar theyre also different and if you have both, it wouldn’t be redundant. They fill in each others gaps nicely.

I thought Reelbus was based on an Akai A3440 Reel2Reel ..Satin more generic but in the area of the Studer stuff.

Reels gets closer to the cassette sound because it's based on cheapo R2R which ran at lower speeds..

Do you mean a TEAC A-3440? I happen to have one. :phones:

that's right..Akai did one I think, can't remember what it was now..

I started with a ReVox A77 (still have it), then had a Tascam 34. Happy days(ish).

Except for the cost of tape!

well apart from...

the cost of tape
forgetting to clean the heads before a session
the noise (and squeaking of reels that got onto recordings sometimes)
print through/ failing to completely erase (saving money on tape)
the Tascam 34 had a dodgy input so sometimes didn't record
they are heavy
they need servicing
oh and before servicing the ReVox managed to break one of my master tapes.

but still I'd forgotten that many of the digital recording I had done sounded a little too pristine so it's nice to have these plugins...

I'm currently debating between the two as well. Sketchcassette is only 10 dollars right now and from the one video on the site, it sounds pretty great.
