That sounds like me too.
And it definitely would have been unthinkiable because as just a blind amateur stumbling around, the whole experience of making sound for me was mostly a by product of playing with new toys. The stumbling around was more fun than the music. It still is, but it was, too.
I will always check out new weird stuff, but new releases of utilitarian stuff like eq/comp/filter.. Im too spoiled for choise to look at much these days.

Something like Ultraloop/Rhythmiq/etc that has a bunch of live audio inputs, and outs...
Half the fun I have is building chains to that effect, and its pretyt niche for sure, but I am still missing a solid purpose built vst instrument that shuffles live audio like that.
