Randomize or Mod Sample Start position in MSF?

Can't find a way to do this—Ideas?

Hope I'm just missing something!

Post

Unfortunately it's not (yet) possible directly. (Maybe it will? Don't know)
But a possibility is described in this video:
viewtopic.php?f=138&t=535118

I wait also for a direct modulation possibility of the starting point, which only shifts when starting the note, i.e. per note.

Post

Not possible. I don't think it will be either.
There is a way to modulate the first 100ms using the skip start parameter.

Why :( ?

Post

I don't know. I asked Vojtech for it and he said no. I explained that there needs to at least be a way to offset the start to avoid the machine gun sound, that's when the skip start feature was added.
There must be some reason to can't be implemented. Maybe there is a work around for you? Were you just generally asking? Or is there a specific thing you were trying to achieve?

I've been trying all night to build my own granulizer. Everything worked except that i can change sample position per note.
Changing the position in "manual" mode is no problem as long as you don't play and modulate the sound together.
Unfortunately there is no modulator "note constant" like "note random" which would have led to a result.
It's important that the starting point only changes with "note on" and per note. Otherwise, you just get the scrubbing sound.
Randomize is possible with "note random" and this technique: viewtopic.php?f=138&t=535118

OK. 2 questions:
1. Will you please send me the setting for what you have so far? I am quite interested in it. I might be able to help with the issue, but at very least I will find it interesting to see what you made.
2. Is it worth putting effort into this when a granular synthesis module is coming anyway?
Jason @ Melda Production

Post

1. Yes, but i'm not on my home PC :), so maybe in the evening
2. To make my own granulizer? Depends on what there will be. Is a sample granulizer planned? I wanna determine the grain size with pitch and speed sync and add individual FX per grain. Becausei've crazy claims  .
Or if you mean, to make the start point on note automateable, i think yes. That would be useful for advance things. (Rythm piano roll granulizing...?)

Post

Yeah, I mean the granular. It is planned. Not sure when it will be, but I'm excited to get it.

Well, it's always worth learning. But I am also very excited! I hope with more extreme and versatile adjustment possibilities, as i am used to from melda :).

I would like to see this feature aswell... as I changed from Bitwig to Reaper I depend on the MSF Sampler now. I used this feature A LOT in the Bitwig Sampler, especially for "automated grain loops".

One workaround for simple start position changes could be --> Enable Loop / set start position to the same position as the loop end / then modulate loop start.

But this only solves the problem for me in 50% of the cases, because you only can change the start position and can´t modulate the loop end with it, then for this workaround the start position needs to be on the same position as the loop end.
But sometimes I want to modulate a small loop that changes position and still keep the loop length.

SMALL BUG: when changing the sample with the arrow keys, and the start position is set to the end of the sample window, it can disapear when the next or previous sample is shorter than the one selected.

Check out: viewtopic.php?f=138&t=533126

I think it should be possible to use a note random instead of the s&h in the example.
Nevertheless this won't work as a true granular synth like steinberg padshop does, because one voice cannot pick an arbitrary number of grains...

EDIT: BUG with the Manual Position is SOLVED!!! (I was too stupid and used a preset that I created in an earlier beta version)

In the past i used this aswell, but nowadays I always get programm crashes (DAW freezes) when using the "manual position" function (btw, it crashes both, Bitwig and Reaper).

I would have sent a bug report in the next days.. (sorry Vojtech):
When playing a note and changing the manual position by hand or with a lfo the whole programm crashes. Reaper even tries to auto-mute the channel before it dies... in Bitwig I only get pretty high volume readouts and then it crashes.

Why did you change from Bitwig? I think it is a really great DAW.

At first, it is kind of a test run, if reaper can be the one for me (it looks very promising at the moment). I love Bitwig since the first day... I´m customer nr. 31 8) and maybe come back when they fixed their problems.

But I can´t ignore the workflow killing bugs like:
- some vst windows open behind already opened windows (so you need to close e.g. 8 windows to get to the new one)
- when working with the grid and it is opened it takes a rediciolous amount of cpu.
- MSF, MXXX, and some other Melda Plugins in VST3 crashes when inserting it by double clicking in the browser (already talked to Vojtech and it is a bitwig problem. He even sent them an info what the problem might be... still not fixed after 6 months)
- They seem to struggle with their ability to code and already can´t oversee their own program... they seem kind of lost in there.. :dog: (not really sure about that... I´m not a dev)
- I give a lot on Vojtechs opinion and he isn´t a big fan of this program (there where a lot of Bitwig only related bugs...)
- Bitwig can´t handle Songs with a lot of track counts (60-150) without noise clicks and nagging around
- A lot of users complain about noise clicks throughout the perfomance (not suiteable for live cases)
- BUT the most thing that annoyed me was the poor, greedy, transparent marketing schema that is screwing with the customers... I can´t beta test the new 3.1 Update without paying 120 euros... my subscription ran out... and this beta testing would take time off the 1-year "subscription"... That is simply wrong!!! NO THANK YOU TO THAT.

Reaper on the other hand is amazing... the philosophy of Justin is just great... now he will get my yearly 120 euro that bitwig would have cost me. guys like him needs to be supported.. same with Vojtech.

Reaper is the bomb (if I dare to say, it´s the best DAW out there), I just didn´t realize that before.
Spectral editing, amazing Midi Editor (compared to Bitwig), Action List, fully customizabe GUI, so much more editing features e.g. ripple editing/group editing/etc., video support, midi editor and automations can be edited and viewed in regions/media items in the arranger (no automation lanes or midi editor needed to get a quick look on them or change curves or midi notes), stretch marker directly viewd on the item, I like the new darker look of Reaper v6, monitor FX, Items FX, clone items, automation regions, look at the FIR Plugin in REaper --> similar to Mspectral dynamics, it is a coding environment with compiler, etc. (Python,...) ... you can create or edit JS FX to your liking.
EDIT: and Subprojects which are like the smart objects in Photoshop... SSOO AMAZING!!!

Long story short... in my opinion it's just a way more professional software than bitwig.

Check out at least 10 videos of Kenny Goia... and maybe it will rock your world like it did mine. I can only say good things about this software... most feature complete software I worked with. (Logic, Live, Cubase,Bitwig and very little Pro Tools in the University Studio until I installed Bitwig and now Reaper installed on a Flashdrive :o :borg: )

Sorry for highjacking this thread... *feel bad and a little embarrassed* when looking at this block of text :x ... won´t happen again! :D :(
