I-MAP drumming finger positions?

I was watching the demo videos for ST2 and was blown away by what you can play with your fingers in the I-MAP configuration. However, I tried to learn to play that way and I can't figure out which fingers were used for what sounds. I've used my fingers to play the whole drum kit on the keyboard for many years now, but since I'm used to the GM layout, it's really hard for me to get my head around this new method. I usually use my left middle finger for the bass, left index for the snare, right index for the closed hi-hat and right ring finger for the open hi-hat. Of course, this fingering method kills off a lot of possibilities for more complex drumming, that's why I want to learn the I-MAP method.
I actually play drums too (I own a Clavia DDrum 4 system), but for laying down midi tracks, I much rather play with my fingers on the keyboard since it's faster to edit--no need to run back and forth between drum kit and keyboard/mouse.

Thanks Lunatique. I am working on a free video tutorial on I-Map drumming to go along with the release of our "I-Drums" massive I-Map drum kit library about to be released by ILIO. It has taken us yyyyyeeeeeeaaaars to make this library. So, it's about time we showed everyone all of the cool techniques for playing I-Map kits. I'll have clips from that video to show you guys. We'll have that in September.

I use a similar (to you) style of finger drumming - left hand on kicks and snares, and right hand on hats and additional snares (similar to a "real" drummer). I find that that configuration works really well, except for the toms (which would be difficult anyway, because they're so far away!).
Forever,
Kim.

Yep. That is the only drawback of the I-Map is that in order to have all of the articulations of the hats, the toms suffer from being further away. There isn't much that can be done about that really. However, I am going to do an experiment with two keyboards stacked on top of each other close (like the B3) and skew the map so that the toms are directly ABOVE the kick/snare/hat octaves and see what this is like. I have a feeling everything will be in quick reach like a real drum kit!!!!! I'll let you know. I may do this in my video tutorial.Jeez wrote:I use a similar (to you) style of finger drumming - left hand on kicks and snares, and right hand on hats and additional snares (similar to a "real" drummer). Also, I have a Haken Continuum Fingerboard and I thought maybe it would be interesting for drums but so far... no. However, stretch vocals in ST2 sound amazing from it and other sustained instruments but that is a whole other topic and thread for anyone who knows what this is (reviewed in this month's Keyboard mag).

Thank Squids! Can't wait to see the video!
BTW, I always enjoy reading your posts--you seem like a pleasant, down-to-earth, and well-adjusted person. I see other developers posting too, but you stick out to me because you always talk passionately about music and it's obvious that what you do is a labor of love--not just running a business.

I recently picked up the Sonic Refill Reality Drums and am also having some difficulty adjusting.
Is there a key chart or something available for the IMAP key layout?
Is IMAP and the Reality Drums primarily for Rock drumming? Or are there some mellow kits in there that I haven't found yet?

Even in the meantime a simple chart of which key triggers what sample would keep us all busy and learning until the video is available. Just pressing the issue with a smile! Thanks in advance!
