Why would anyone split them to separate project files?
That's a normal way to work, nothing unusual in it.
I probably didn't make myself clear, sorry for the confusion.
My usual process is making the beat in the same file as recording, mixing and mastering without any audio bumping, as I referred earlier. This way I can edit any pattern/sample/whatever whenever I want, which doesn't really ease my CPU. I know some people for example track out their beat before recording and mixing the vocals, or they use just one WAV file to record on.

Again, that's nothing unusual :)

For example I hardly ever bounce anything, despite using lots of instruments and complex FX chains. I like to have the control until the very end. One great thing with such workflow in Studio One is that you can transfortm tracks to audio (which frees up CPU) but it allows you to preserve the state of all the instuments & insert effects, so you can go back at any time, tweak stuff and transform again. It's similar to track freezing in Live or Cubase.

People used to work like that because than you can record at lowest latency without overloading your system, even today it's quite achievement to record at lowest buffer in full blown project. (without freezing anything)
