And some people like both.

Only one I'd ever need TBH.
Of course. It employs wavetable oscillators.
I heard they were all sacked.

No. That was the guys who coded the oscillators.

Actually don't know that - but I know what you're referring to. :)

Today, a few hours ago, a new wavetable synth was born. It is named Syne. It is mainly an additive synth, and with a very modular architecture. And built by a developer that I like a lot since years and years for his score composing tool that I use every day.

I use this synth since last night and it is absolutely awesome. This new additive/wavetable synth reminds me a lot the famous Kawai K5000 as if it were married to an Argon 8 under the hood of the legendary Ensoniq SD-1 and with an awesome modular GUI.

I wonder - is there any wavetable synth where the single-cycle waveform is actually derived from math equation (and some transformation function), rather than a table / matrix with 256 values for each of 256 states (this I think is the common format)?

Dune 3 allows you to enter a Math Formula to generate a waveform.....

If they are basic waveforms or mathematical manipulations thereof, you could populate arrays (wavetables) this way - or use FFT - or by summing sine waves, as with additive synthesis. If waveform shape is of importance or interest then I would favour a design method of blasting a phase accumulator (ramp oscillator running from 0 to 1) through some mathematical functions before sampling the result.

There are various methods to design waveforms though, including piecewise methods, which can create some interesting results.

Ok, but do they - Dune3 and/or Serum - actually use that function and transform / recalculate it real-time further down the chain, or do they calculate it once to quantize the result to fit into the 256 points single-cycle waveform?
