they can be surprisingly musical while having their skulls smashed in
especially if you can line up a dozen or so of different sizes....

AS I get older(ok so Im not *that* old at 28 ), the good ideas seem fewer and farther between. I had a huge dry speel when I took to actually learning guitar and piano theory and taking time to practice on these instruments at least 30 minutes per day. As I got better at playing others' music, I got much WORSE at composing. I have since tried to find a balance between learning new theory and spending time making new music.

I have noticed that even in the early days when most of the ideas were bad, I found very creative ways to pull them off, which made the whole thing sound much better than it was. I also used to do more production to my music which would make things sound better too. I have started to enjoy stripped down music with little production, but as projects are being recorded its easy to grow disappointed until it all comes together...

I think Elliot Smith put it best when he was asked about a dry spell. "I welcome dry spells, sometimes your imagination needs a vacation, so its best to let it have some time off" or something like that...

Exactly. To bring up tattooing again, I got some work done on me years ago by an extremely talented guy whose gone on to be regarded as one of the best in the business..This guy freehanded everything he did, full sleeves, back pieces, the whole nine yards..Doing that's no problem for me, but this guy did it EVERY time..You should have seen how stressed out he was..he confided in me at the time that it drove him crazy & how burnt out it made him constantly living on his wits that way from commission to commission..he would have to take 6 month breaks almost every year to recharge his batteries & was constantly toeing the line of walking away from it for good..

Personally, I'm grateful I'm not solicited on every commission to generate the Mayan Calendar or recreate the Cistine Chapel..

As a hobbyist, you might not feel that imperative to create as a means of sustaining your lifestyle, so when you hit a dry spell you might not recognize what's actually happening here, which is simply an over-saturation that needs to be temporarily walked away from.

As mentioned before, when you return, you're bigger, faster, stronger, so never feel badly about downtime..

Now Apathy is an entirely different story..

Composing shit is no problem at all. Composing something I'd be proud of, however....

I'd say that I don't really have dry spells as much as I have "gear aquisition cycles". I'll go a couple months without doing much recording, but I'm usually buying new gear left and right during that time. Once I learn how to use it I record like crazy for a while. Then, once I start to feel burned out, I go buy more stuff and learn how to use it.

So far it's working out pretty well. My gear list is about half-way finished. As a matter of fact, I'm picking up a new guitar next paycheck. Then it's on to a set of electronic drums that will play nicely with Drumkits From Hell Superior. Then a BassPodXT, a NordRack 3, some Mackie monitors, a nice pre-amp, etc...

That's about $4,000 or so? Damn I wish I could find a well paying, non-part time job.

Ah well, don't sweat a little dry spell. No one wants to hear what you would have written anyway. :wink:

10 minutes or so.

I generally just start up fractal explorer. Once everything starts clicking it stays clicking. {I suppose you could always convert things with Coagula or something.}

{{Come to think of it... I never have dry spells.}}

Late last year I was shitting myself about what we could put on our next album. I put abunch of stuff on a CD and thought - 'We're f**ked!". Only two weeks later we had about 13 things that were looking really good and we ended up having to cull stuff. Only a coupleof new songs out of that, the rest were just things we had lying around that suddenly started to work well wfter a bit of elbow grease was applied.

The only thing that gets me writing is the process itself. I've never been able to go and do something or listen to something or anything like that to get my juices flowing. It always takes a new sound or a good riff so when I feel tapped out I usually reach for a new instrument [or I go and build one].
