The response from my friend was that both synths use the CEM3340 and SSM2044, so there is a certain similarity there. The VCA is probably not the same vintage SSM one, and it it has a more limited set of modulation routings. So basically, the answer is kinda sorta yes but not really.e-crooner wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2020 11:08 pmThe brass pad from 4:35 and the pad from 5:20 sound very nice to me.deastman wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2020 10:53 pmI have a friend with several Voyetra-8’s, and he swears by it as being the best sounding analog synth ever made. I’m pretty sure he has a CAT too, although I don’t recall ever hearing it. I’ll ask his opinion on that.e-crooner wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2020 9:36 pm The original seemed to be a rare, exotic synth similar to the Oscar.
I read that this Voyetra 8 thingy is a kind of 8-voice polyphonic version of the Cat:
"The Voyetra Eight was in many ways an 8-voice polyphonic CAT."

Seven pages of this thread - and I may have missed something - but is there even one single reply here that actually is on topic 'bout this synth?
Anyway, depending on the price it might be an interesting synth. I wouldn't want to play more than € 250 to €300 for this thing. The morphing of the different wave forms of the 2 oscillators and "duophonic (2-voice) capability" is interesting. Dunno if the filter is 12 or 24 dB. I think that there are a little bit too many synths on the market now that can't save their patches. I'll accept it from a Minimoog clone, but not for every synth though.

Edit: re-thinking it for a moment, sure there are some jerk customers that may deserve to be called out. But there are many vendors that are completely disrespectful to their customers no matter how kind and polite the customer might be, and people like that piss me off. If a customer is disrespectful and especially repeatedly so, then sure, they welcome to be knocked down a peg or two. But overall, my opinion stands that the customer is always right (barring extreme extenuating circumstances).

Original Cat had a 4-pole filter, so this one is the same too.

if you want patch saving, you can forget 250-300 for an analogue hardware synthMeneerJansen wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2020 1:39 pm Seven pages of this thread - and I may have missed something - but is there even one single reply here that actually is on topic 'bout this synth?

I'd prefer them all to have kybds, but again, that's a big price hike
these are cheap and cheerful, and just what the market needs

these are just a different option for different needs.
id have loved to have had an "uli" when i was a teenager. even guitar fx weren't pocket money back then.
that teenagers/kids can grab a little rig for peanuts, and jam with friends/alone is awesome! not to mention, we get to add, one or two, extra "flavours" to our set up for next to nothing.
they're not pokemon, you dont need them all

Wow, what a long post.codec_spurt wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:26 am I got to play the Voyetra 8 many years back in a studio in Wales where the synth pop band Bronski Beat offloaded a lot of their stuff.

Grab a synth or two from GForce if the sale is still on, or even if the sale is not still on - much cheaper, much more flexible and with a comparable and probably wider palette of sounds.
imho.
Bronski Beat, hehe, I remember their first and biggest hit, there were so many synth bands back then.
Sounds like programming it was a bit like programming the DX7. From what I read, most people also used the factory presets because it was so difficult to understand and make patches in a constructive, deliberate way.
I wonder why they didn't make a complete synth with keyboard of the Voyetra 8, like the Cat. That might have become much more successful and sold better. The desktop version looks like some bland lab device, not a music instrument.
The analogy to the Oscar referred to both Cat and Oscar having been "small", exotic synths, unlike the famous Oberheims, SCI's, Korg, Rolands and Yamahas. Technically I have no idea if there was any similarity.

Many owners of small shops are not very forthcoming these days because many people enter shops, test products, leave and then order them cheaper on Amazon etc.Russell Grand wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2020 5:57 pmNahhh....e-crooner wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2020 8:55 pmI don't agree at all. Is it just me or do the majority of sounds in the demo video sound like the machine is broken? There are a couple of OK sounds but most of it sounds completely busted. Plus, of course, no patch memory makes it a toy.

Yeah, I had the same feeling (especially early on, and around 7:30-7:50-ish...), maybe just the demo-ers lack of familiarity with the products potential(?). Though the format (desktop/eurorack-able) is something I am quite keen on, this particular offering is not something of interest to me, so I'm not missing-out, or disappointed. I hope it comes in at a price point that makes it approachable for those who do want/gotta-have, 'that-sound'.
