I am sitting here at a computer. In a library. in my highschool. I just had a thought and I would like to write a nice little essay on it. This is not going to be true to essay form because I only have 50 minutes to write it. So here goes nothing.

Turn on the tv and watch a music video or two. More often then not you will probably see a rap video filled to the brim with product placements. I am going to tell you right now, this video will bore you to tears. Now wait a few hours watching the same channel sooner or later you will see a video done by some band you have never heard. This video will be completly original, have no product placements and you will probably love it to bits. This video will never be played on this channel again.

For this band makes something original and unique. Big businesses think "This band is cool anbd original but they might not get big. So they will go to the artists that are already huge and make videos or write music that stayes true to the last big band. They willl give these "artists" tonnes of money to advertise whatever the company makes. this artist becomes famouse because of all the support while the original and unique group performs in bars for thier entire life.

I understand why the companies do this, they want to make money and ORIGINAL ARTISTS MIGHT NOT MAKE THEM ANY "MONEY."

I also understand that teenagers have the most spendable money out of all other age groups. So companies spend millions on research into what teans want. From this research they are told teenagers want rap and pretty much what the companies are already selling us. I am a teen ager (age 17) I HATE RAP. If I took a poll of everyone sitting right beside me in this library I bet atleast 80 percent of the teens would say the same. Rap was cool in the 90's but now it's boring. Companies must find something completly original and new.

For example. At my school they introduced a new drink. It was iced tea in about 100 diffrent flavours. for 1.25 canadian (which is the same price as a can of pop) you got twice as much tea as you get in a can of pop and you get twice the caffiene. Not to mention the huge health benifates. These iced teas ARE HUGE. An entire machine full of them gets soled out every day. Think of what it would be like if a company discovered a band like this. completly new and original.

Thats enough ranting from me.

it's a complex world.. there are many conflicting forces. putting a spin on public perception (eg. "ENTeRtAINMENT," politics, culture.. opinion modulation) is an old, deep.. deep game. (how's that p.w.e.i. plato quote go.. the quickest way to any society is thru it's music?)

keep your eyes and ears open.

Not in this day and age.

My view is that corporations (governments, or whatever, insert your favorite evil institution here) are only able to get away with what we, the people, allow them to.

So when do we stop complaining and make some real sacrifices to make a change? See, most people will lament the fact that the Patriot Act creates a Gestapo State, or that the Big Five (or four, or three) record labels are killing musical creativity. But very, very few people are willing to risk the comforts of their life to make a real change.

Okay so I admit I haven't done much yet. But the key word is yet. I believe that my life's destiny is to prepare until I am equipped to sacrifice myself (life, freedom, creature comforts, or whatever form of sacrifice I am faced with) to make a positive change. You see, all those before use who have made a difference have done so through sacrifice. Che Guevara, Malcolm X, Ghandi, Patrice Lumumba,......

I make music everyday without corporations interfering about it.

But seriously, it's not just big corporations... I've been ripped off by two independent labels and one independent distributor as well. So if you want something done right, do it yourself.

And yup, that sounds like LJ alright.

I have a great deal of respect for both of them. Even though Guevara's path took a very unfortunate direction in Cuba.

I suspect then that Malcolm X's name being there bothers you as well?

Incidentally, that's my first time into that forum... I never noticed it before. Let me guess, it was created for her?

I suspect, after a casual 5-minute investigation, that she and I would see eye-to-eye on some topics.
