In the end the right thing to do is to vote with your wallet. Use your money to support any of the charities or research institutions in your area that are focused on curing the WDS (Waves Derangement Syndrome). It's a serious mental disorder that seems to be increasingly common these days and we need to raise awareness of it.

It's quite connected to the Alliance Anger Syndrome, which has taken over big parts of online communities...robotmonkey wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2020 6:49 pm In the end the right thing to do is to vote with your wallet. Sorry for the delay, been busy and I'm still re-learning the board's moderation functions.
I've split the thread, leaving (in the mods' non-public board) the posts trying to rationalize piracy and some of the joking that followed. Here's the rest of the thread. Carry on.

Was just looking for this two hours ago and wondered weather it was in my head that such a thread existed and I posted in it. Could not find a single post in my post historyMeffy wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2020 6:30 pm Sorry for the delay, been busy and I'm still re-learning the board's moderation functions.

Well, I must say again that their system probably works pretty well. As I was upgrading my main DAW finally to Win 10 the other day, I obviously had to reinstall all the Waves plugins. Thought that maybe it's a good idea then to upgrade two out of the three plugins I had on V10 to V11 (one of them is included in the bundle that's already on V11 so no point to upgrade) so that 3/4 of my plugins would be on V11 and 1/3 on V9.
Paid the 26$ and upgraded. Of course, when you WUP Waves sends you a voucher for the same amount that you can use to spend freely on anything else. This in turn lead me to check out if I would want to use the voucher on something else. Lo and behold, Tape, Tubes & Transistors upgrade from the two plugins I already had cost only 33$ and the voucher discounted it even further down to 16$. Could not resist pulling the trigger as the two plugins I upgraded from were on V9 and this offered the opportunity to upgrade them super cheaply to V11. And in addition I got an extra plugin too. Not a bad deal at all.
This is how the economy of microtransactions works.

If I remember right, in the past Waves' policies have been far more… punitive than nowadays.
As things stand, when a client was insistent that I use several specific Waves plug-ins on a small project, I thought about letting the job go. I owned just Abbey Road Plates at the time, I think, and there happened to be some better-than-usual deals so I spent part of the pay for that job on Horizon. Pretty good stuff, not the best in the business but nothing seems below par to me.
What does rub me the wrong way is the way prices seem to bounce randomly around. Hard to make a rational (as opposed to impulse-based) buying decision when last week's "lowest" is undercut by this week's super-special deal. But that's a mild complaint; as with everything, if I think a price is too high I exercise the option to say "naah, too much" and move on. Which, for years, is what I did.
Still haven't upgraded to the full Abbey Road collection. Someday maybe. That really would be an impulse buy.
[eta] Oh, one other company irritates me by playing the cat-and-mouse price game. Corel. I've seen one price on the irritating pop-up notification and a different price in emails the same day.

I gotta say I really don't like that constant sale strategy, and that $29 thing. Damn it man, this is not the 70s any more, I look at $29 and think $30, I rlly don't think this psychological pricing game works on anyone anymore. Just make it $30 and be done with.
Really, though, just make a majority of your plugins $30 already, or maybe $50-60 so you have somewhere to go with Black Friday Sales.
But hey, regardless of what marketing strategies their sales department want to do, the tech is still good, some of it quite innovative, so I'm still happy to pay that $29.

I found out yesterday that by “upgrading” Diamond to Horizon I lost Cobalt Sapphire
How is that possibly an upgrade?

H-Comp (tempo-synced release time), H-Reverb (really easy to customize the reverb tail), Aphex Aural Exciter, MaxxBass, IR1, Vitamin, Center, API 2500 (Unlike their 1176, LA-2A and SSL, which I've found replacements for).Ploki wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2020 5:11 pmWhich?AdvancedFollower wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2020 4:11 pm Gradually I'm also finding equivalent or better replacements from other developers, but there are still a few Waves plugins I can't live without.
Not provoking, just curious
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

That's interesting indeed. Looking at Horizon it seems that Cobalt Sapphira is not included in it. This surely must be a bug in Waves systems so you should let them know. I'm sure they will deposit a separate license to your account if needed and if it's not there already.Mushy Mushy wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2020 11:53 am I found out yesterday that by “upgrading” Diamond to Horizon I lost Cobalt Sapphire

Good idea, I’ll do that. My only concern is then being issued a v11 license and then having to run multiple versions. I believe this is possible but I tend to avoid playing around with things like this in the middle of projects.robotmonkey wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2020 1:36 pmThat's interesting indeed. I think the plan will be to message Waves, get the license and activate it in May when the WUP special typically happens.

NLS and the X-Whatever denoisers aren't in Horizon either, but are in Diamond. However, as it's an upgrade/crossgrade, it's a bit mad that the non-included plugins get removed.

If I had used these in a project and then had them removed I’d be well pissed.Gamma-UT wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2020 2:00 pm NLS and the X-Whatever denoisers aren't in Horizon either, but are in Diamond. However, as it's an upgrade/crossgrade, it's a bit mad that the non-included plugins get removed.

You wouldn’t have lost it, that’s not the way they work. Although there are some who would like to think so. It’s a pity it’s not included in the bundle, but you just need to pay for its WUP separately. I think that’s around 10% of its full retail price.Mushy Mushy wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2020 11:53 am I found out yesterday that by “upgrading” Diamond to Horizon I lost Cobalt Sapphire

Or you could just make sure you have the older version of it installed. A version that you do have a valid license for.
Not ideal solutions, but not insidiously bad either.
