American Pie...because when I was a kid my neighbor and good friend played that on his acoustic and about once a month my mother would ask him to play and sing for us...if I wrote that (maggie may too) I could have made it stop

My mother never asked me to play, she stopped my guitar lessons because my teacher was stringing me along and teaching me useless things*. In her eyes, 12 bar blues is what he started me with, like I never used that huh. This teacher was the big brother of another good friend (at least 6 or 7 years older than us), he taught out of our tiny little music store in town owned by the musical family. So my mother switched me to their son who was in his 20's, he taught me stones songs , that was my lesson...I'd give him a song, he would teach it to me if he knew it or learn it first, then teach me. (I bought a Hagstrom II off him, no lie...chose it over a Gibson SG, this was around 72 so guessing a 60's SG ) To the day she died in 2018 my mother never supported my music...or understood it as she put it. The first teacher actually hit the road (he came from a family of 5 brothers...he was the only one who I could talk about outside of hpc , odd family) so I stuck with the second guy, I did odd jobs to pay for it (which after my parents got divorced was often "hey dad, I need money" )

Apparently it just wasn't the holidays with a 12 year old Hink trying to crank out purple haze on a junk guitar through a ham radio amp...who'd a thunk? So he came over (we wont even talk about her reaction when she saw the cover of Alice Cooper goes to Hell or the fact that was an xmas present from my dad one year)

*when I got my first electric, I had the same teacher for a bit as my neighbor the year before with a horrid acoustic but I wasn't learning what I wanted), I still remember playing over and over a song called "The Merry Men" in the first mel bay book in the guitar series then. When I worked in retail that stupid little song (not a song, just a few bars really) was still in the books

Never seen either, either. Never seen Home Alone, never seen The Sound of Music. Those sorts of films have never interested me.

Not even close to my favourite Psychedelic Furs song, although Psychedelic Furs are one of my favourite bands (even though I have to ignore a big chunk of their mid-late 80s catalogue), and it's the only song on the soundtrack I even vaguely like.

Anyway, I forgot to answer the question. If there are any songs I wish I'd written, and until I read the question it is not something I had ever thought about, it would be any of the songs on this album. It is a masterpiece, an absolute tour de force from 1985.

It’s on one of my all time favorite albums, and it evokes a lot of good memories of what I was doing at the time it was released. Can’t think of anything else written that even remotely resembles it.

my mother never supported my music...

I feel you.. I fell in love with synthesizer sounds early 90's and felt a real burn "I want to learn how to play keyboard". Told my mom that I want to go to piano lessons. The answer was "get a real hobby".

After enough whining I received my grandads old shitguitar that was more like ornament than an instrument and no lessons for it. Sooo I continued to ask those piano lessons but now the answer was "you didn't learn that guitar either so I'm not going to waste money on piano lessons".

Music teacher at my school was my last hope. I asked if he could teach me since our class had a few keyboards. He was like "sure!" and allowed me to stay at class practicing. Though he didn't stay teaching, went for a coffee and said "just turn it on and start practicing". I never found out how to turn the power on

So thanks mom.. Thanks music teacher at school.. Your dedication and interest in my desires really helped me.. Not..
Sometimes I think, would I have a musical career if she'd have supported me.

^^I got support, up to a point. my father played accordion, and taught me basic music theory around the same time I was learning to read prose. The accordion was practically bigger than I was, but I could play a few xmas carols and marches (my father loved marches, I wonder why?) Anywhoooo, my older brother got a guitar a month after the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan show, and my parents would forever associate the guitar with being a rebellious shithead teenager. So, when my time came around and asked for a guitar, around age 11, I was refused. Ironically, my brother left an acoustic guitar at our place when I was 12, but one of the tuners was broken. I got absolutely no encouragement. It could've been fixed easily, and I could've gotten the basics for learning, tuning pipe, chord chart, etc., but nope. I let the movers take it. I like to tell myself that it was a Sigma, not a Martin.
