ive been playing guitar for about 9 years, and i think its time to learn some new stuff. I have been into minimalist lead playing nirvana-style, then into the blues, then into jazz, but one thing i never learned is some of the essential 80s techniques like sweep picking... how do i do it???

I have pretty quick hands, but the techniques are needed to expand :)

there's not much to learn..

sweep down in one direction while timing the damping of the string plucked

you get the damping by loosely keeping your finger on the string right after plucking

just hold a chord and sweep in one direction, best followed by a different chord (or variant) when turning the sweep in the other direction

I've actually just started learning this technique myself. http://www.insaneguitar.com/mc/sweeping.html has a video clip demonstrating the technique. The guy in the clip is maybe a bit of a dork, but he does show you quite clearly what a sweep arpeggio is all about.

You wanna see sweep picking done well watch the new G3 dvd with Steve Vai(Joe and Yngwie )(song is: I know you're here).

Ummmm...

Most importantly (even more importantly cos you've bin playing for a while) is to practise slowly and with a metronome.

Three words from Mr Vai: Constant, accurate and intense.

One word from me: Rock on :D
I play guitar
