Different reasons for different people at different periods within the time they use it.

Generally the factors include:

The GUI and changes to the GUI fall below standard during development.

Stability of the DAW and through it's development.

Whether current and future development is expected.

The image of the software and of those developing the software.

Lack of innovation to provide advancement in development to compete with competitors.

Outgrowing the capabilities the software is able to provide and thus the needs that you require lay else where.

The relationship you have becomes frosty with the software developer, by that of support and or lack of communication when you need it.

The software development reaches the stage of EOL (End of Life).

The software becomes subscription based.

You run out of money and can't afford to pay for it.

You decide that music production is no longer for you or is due to personal circumstances, directly or indirectly.

The real reason people switch DAWs is because sometimes the grass is greener on the other side, because of the improved workflow and features.

Also, who's maintaining the yard work, do they listen to their customers feedback or implement garden gnomes everywhere?

Cubase had become too expensive to update after I switched (unnecessarily) from Artist to Pro, it was increasingly instabile, and (most importantly) I wanted something more focused on writing/producing than mixing & mastering. It’s a GREAT environment to do mixdowns and mastering in, but if it’s too damn hard to write music to get IN to Cubase... you’ve got no material to mix down.

I’ve just found Reason to be FAR more conducive to writing and getting my ideas down. Ultimately, I needed a much better sketch pad program than I did a full studio program.
