Somehow this one got through the cracks... :hihi:

It's a super inspiring, beautiful and probably the most feature-complete DAW (for hobbyist user, at least...) but all of its flaws rear their ugly head when projects get bigger:
  • no folder tracks,
  • devices get their own lanes whenever automated and that can't be hidden only minimised),
  • some devices' controls are small and GUI can't be resized,
  • patching cables is super fun but try to modify a complex patch or get back to your project after few months...
And Reason 11 sealed the deal, allowing me to take all the native stuff & 1k EUR of REs with me to Bitwig and Studio One (which is why I still have it, but effectively left it as a DAW).

The same really could be said about anything though.

I wouldn’t say I LEFT Reason. Im even very happy about the concept of using the rack in Logic (I never thought ReWire was a sensible approach).

I’m just not going to use it much NOR SPEND MONEY on it again UNTIL Propellerhead rebuilds the GUI in high-PPI graphics. The rack designs are beautiful; I don’t want that changed. It’s just too damned small and they’ve been way too lax about this issue for far too long.

And I’m still not going to stop calling their company by their prior name. It was already a PITA to do internet searches on Reason topics when they had a unique company name, but it was helpful to prefix “propellerhead” to the search. Now, with this stupid ass generic name, it’s going to be far worse. It’s also just a damned stupid and boring name change. What do you expect from vulture capitalist “investors”...

So you’re the type of person that has been promoting the stupid flat minimalism design fad... :-p

Aside from the problem of the bitmaps being tiny, I’d take Reason’s skeuomorphic design over all the flat garbage currently proliferating.

Skeuomorphism is not a bad word. That’s a Jony Ive meme.

Flathead cult fad is at its peak around 2013 the time windows 8 was released. And they are getting left out of mainstream. New generation is adopting slight 3D element and moderate visual effect to provide users affordance and immersiveness while maintaining the minimalistic.

Oh that wasn’t nearly the peak. It was the start of the flood! iOS 7 came out that year! 🤢 🤮

Upon iOS 7 vomiting onto the scene, Apple’s horrible design choices were again taken up as the model to be mimicked (even when Apple’s new designs came from a renewed ignorance of UI design due to the abandonment of their own decades of actual UI design research).

I know apple is struggling with finding middle ground. This article is also suggesting it. " Things have improved in subsequent releases, but it hasn’t been a painless process to find the right balance." I remember iOS7 design change felt so cheap, rushed, bland and soulless for apple's standard.

Yup. Agreed. Someone leaked the info (rumor?) that Jony Ive went straight around the existing UI designers and handed the redesign task to the print marketing department... Long-time designers employed at Apple have been reported leaving Apple ever since.

Um...isn’t this thread supposed to be about Reason...?

Post

I disagree with that article that Google has found a balance. They’ve just found an appearance that is somewhat identifiable as their own and it’s less ugly than Apple’s.

Also, why do their apps consume SO MUCH SPACE for what ought to be vector graphics but is probably just bitmaps?

They have awful tools overall. I had to stop using GMail for conversations between my newest girlfriend and I because the messages were long and Google doesn’t think we need to be able to see or edit the full content of long emails...

Yeah. Sorry!

I really just wanted to make it clear that I don’t want Propellerhead to flatten and minimalism-ize Reason’s GUI. I like the design.

I’ve had periods of not using Reason, but I always go back to it. Probably because I think of it as a big CV playground, so have never really used it for conventional recording.
