Monitoring midi in cubase 5 vst

Can anyone help? We have cubase vst 5 installed on a few machines where I work but we can't hear midi notes while they are being recorded (monitoring?). We can hear them ok when playing back but not whilst recording.

I've had a nose around as much as I can but I don't know the program (an SX / Nuendo man myself). I've been in audio setup and ensured that ASIO direct monitoring is enabled but that didn't make any difference.

Can anyone shed some light on what might be causing the problem. The workstations are useless to the students if they can't hear what they're playing when recording.
