Cubase SX 2 Using VST effects on external gear?

Hey all, I know this is possible, because ive heard some talk about it before here and there...But can't for the life of me find anything about it in the maual.

Basicly if i get some hardware in the future, i would like to be able to use VST effects on the hardware synth (as alot of hardware synths dont come with Inbuilt FX)

as far as i can see there are two ways i could do this, 1: route the audio out on the hardware synth to an audio in on my sound card, then add FX on it like i would an audio track (is it possible to do it in real time? or would i have to record first?)

2: Sample my stuff from the hardware synth then use it like a normal audio clip (sort ties in with above)

Can anyone give me a hand here, Or at least point me in the right section of the manual that explains how to do this
