Pro Tools: I finally understood it.... it's cool

This maybe a bit of a silly question but does Traktion or other sequencers work ok with the MBox? I almost bought one until the guy in the shop said that unless I used Pro Tools I'd be better off with something else.

Post

it works pretty good with Tracktion, FLStudio or whatever.... the ASIO drivers are very good.... I have to restart the driver once in a while (when the latency is set very low) but that's all...

but as I said ProTools is a nice addition when you get the MBox - though they really should allow ProTools to playback without the MBox being conected.... I won't redcord thru my directsound anyway....

go on Digidesign do it...

(but now pro tools is pretty close) fun: flstudio is definitly a winner (but I haven't figured it out yet to check if it's more then that.....) features: pro tools comes with a whole lot of cool plug-ins and it's editing features are great... haven't tested MIDI so far but will report if it's great or not

and what about eXT :x

all you need is a proper lesson :P

:hihi:
:hihi:

yeah we'll do that - we'll definetly do that - after Manc and after I moved to my new home..

well the thing about Pro Tools is it has one really big flaw (doesn't run without the MBox being conected)

but the supplied RTAS plug-ins alone are worth the trouble.... the Bombfactory Limiter is awesome....
yes, I myself thought about getting a mbox :-o

anyway: eXT keeps getting better and better every day - I've been away on holiday for about ten days and when I downloaded the new version today I couldn't believe how much it has improved during that time  :D

with the new sampler comp eXT's price is more than ridiculous :D

@Gordon: I'm gonna try and put up a few basic beginner's tutorials which show another approach than Nicfit's (fantastic :hail: ) tutorials

Hey Mully

Do you know how to create a standard .wav file and export it in PT LE? My guitar player uses it and I use Tracktion and it would be great to exchange files! Can it be done?

Thanks

well as I said... haven't tested MIDI and instruments so much.... I'm a multitracktape kinda guy... but as soon as I know I'll post it
I own a M-Box as well. I bought one when I was taking a ProTools certification class so I could use PT at home. Real nice box for the dollar ammount, plus you get a full host. I've used the ASIO in Cubase SX1/SX2 without any problems. I tend to use my m-audio cards most of the time though since I have monitor out (w/ volume control) off the breakout box. It's a bit of a pain to monitor through a mixer when you've been spoiled by direct headphone/monitor outs.

The only thing really keeping me from using PT(LE) full time is the fact that midi is very poorly implemented. It gives me a headache just thinking about it. As much as Pro Tools is hyped to be the best, their MIDI really lacks, but most users don't use the MIDI anyways... It's audio functions are very powerful.

Cheers.

tell him to look at the audio file "browser window" on the right in the edit window.... he can simply select a file and click on the audio sign above this "browser window" and choose "export selected as file"

The only problem I have with the Mbox is the i/o and mixing options. It's a bitch to record live drums (or any multi-ins) with the Mbox. Then, if you want to mix on a board, you have to either buy a $1500 firewire controller, or else mix with a mouse (which is definitely not fun).

Someone else mentioned the midi implementation in PT, and I must agree that the piano roll sucks a dick. It's much easier to rewire Fruityloops or Ableton Live (etc) and use their piano rolls for midi stuff.

Anyway, for people who want to be portable or are just starting out with multitrack apps, the Mbox is a good investment.

Why did you choose the MBox if you weren't planning to use ProTools?

Kim.

Thanks Mully, I'll try that the next time I'm over there(Sunday) and see if that works. I looked at it once before and finally gave up. Not as simple as T for sure. He does some great stuff with audio though, just doesn't know how to export a wav file.

Thanks alot and peace man!

I LOVE Tracktion... but somehow it seems to buggy for me... (in the last weeks) I'm hoping for T2 - but somehow I prefer ProTools over Tracktion these days...

maybe it's just cause it's new to me

I know what you mean about T being "buggy" but I use it to write songs and that where it shines. When we get ready to record the final results we might let some "real" studio worry about getting it right. Or I might invest in the 002. Right now I'm using Tracktion and SonarIII PE,Echo MIA soundcard and other pretty decent outboard stuff. Also I'm on a pc with XP so the only way to use PT is buying their hardware. Thanks for the tip and enjoy the M-Box and Pro Tools LE. :)
