The other day I had a lesson for the series "month of science": music - day: conductive ink.

You take some conductive ink, paint some object with it, connect to an arduino, turn them into musical instruments. I drew a keyboard on the wall and made it play, kids love that kind of stuff.

I don't mind small keywaves but what troubles me is that I fell like I need to put too much strength to play the Block, do you know if the Rise is any different?
That hasn't been my experience. I prefer the Block because the smaller keywaves make it easier to apply that pressure you need. When your hand is more spread out on the Rise, it's actually more difficult to hit the keys as hard as you sometimes need to. The Rise also tends to bunch up under your fingers more than Block does. I'd definitely go for a second Block.
That's interesting, it's the first time that I read that the Block is even better than the Rise.
As far as I'm concerned I'll probably buy a second Block, first because of the price: I can find a used one for ~160 while a rise is ~650 used. Then the features: portability, usb power and the lack of any transporters on each of the Seaboards, I'm forced to have one more control surface anyway so I can just use 3 knobs of that to control the Seaboard sensitivity.

At least I hope I can! Is it possible to have some CC assigned to control of the Roli Dashboard or else?

i have to check, but i don't think so.
In order for lightpad to act as the seaboards extension, it has to be in certain "app" mode, so it access the API directly, not via midi.
Also, the Rise has two modes for the sliders - when you press power button it switches from CC's to response controls.
it's dumb really, there are a few limitations in software that are just dumb.

Dam I get that, both the Seaboard and the Block are managed by the Roli Dashboard via some proprietary protocol, as they are still available as MIDI controllers.

Actually that makes sense, you should be able to set the controller according to your preference once and then have any specialized setting (like bipolar - absolute slide) for each preset. Shame is that you can do that just in Equator AFAIK but not yet in other VST like Pigments, where you have a curve for velocity and AT but not for Slide.

Pity, I dig the Block as it's a cool controller with both pressure and lights, I'd love to see something like a N. Launchpad X with that kind of surface, or some kind of Linstrument.

Also, there's the thing of that stupid Bluetooth + battery that is worthless to me as I don't have any iOS or Mac. Shame on you Roli: you force me to buy stuff with BT + a battery, at least code your f**king BT transport protocol so it does not rely on a stupid third party MIDI over BT library. Hell old korg keyboards had BT and they did work with windows.

Yeah i cant remember the last time i used it with BT and i have both mac and ios :D

There’s also no sensible way to change “apps” (modes) for the lightpad block via any sensible remote control, or combining modes (say x/y pad and 5x5 grid only), or the dumbest of them all - to change the orientation of a lightpad block.

You can change the mode on the Lightpad M by pressing the button on the side of it to cycle through them.

i know that - you can't easily combine them / throw some out / add some others / without doing some hokey pokey with that programming language. forgot what its called.

Yeah, this with BT on the Roli what made me move on. Actually. I think there's need to start another thread about all these, keyboards, which you have to pay a deposit on, and later on, it didn't turn out that you expected. We know from this thread that Roli expanded their firmware to exclude something that was possible initially, but took it away (I think it was about the sensitive tune, side to side, with the possibilites to change pitch in even more prickly ways) and wasn't possible to retract it to older firmware.

Like with all computers/phones/electronic gear, where you make warranty elusive and shady, since everything is changed within the firmware updates, and if you do not like the new firmware, i e you just HAVE to buy additional BT stuff (say) in order for it to function, you will not comply to that, but can't leave the keyboard back for warranty purposes. I e if you knew about this, or the keyboard had this in the first place, it would have been a deal breaker for you instead of a maker. Now, after you bought it, a year down the line it is incorporated with features, that would have made you NOT buying it should you detect this in the first place. They create a trap, in which you have to buy the hardware, and you're stuck with it.

I think it's a slippery slope if all or most manufacturers does this. That we're still beta testers to them, and will become beta tester and having to pay for it. I e they release something that's not supposed to be released yet... or... ever. Mobile phones like Librem, Fairphone springs to mind, talking about other areas.

@ Friendly Noise.

Nice, did you make those Mellotron soundfonts yourself or is it now in the preset library?
